Chapter 1 - The Nursery

The scream cut through the Velasco mansion like a blade.

Ten-month-old Mateo twisted inside a crib worth more than Sofía Reyes would earn in five years.

Gold-threaded blankets.

Imported silk pajamas.

Custom pillows.

A nursery designed by people who believed luxury could solve anything.

Mateo screamed whenever the fabric touched him.

Nicolás Velasco stood by the window, one hand wrapped around the marble sill.

He had built an empire that reached through ports, construction companies, private security firms, and places respectable men never admitted existed.

Fifteen specialists had examined his son.

Fifteen had failed.

“This is the last one,” Nicolás said.

Valeria Serrano, Mateo’s mother, looked up from the chair beside the crib.

“And if she fails?”

Nicolás’s face hardened.

“Then I take him out of Mexico.”

The nursery door opened.

Sofía entered with a worn medical bag.

Her shoes were cheap.

Her uniform had been repaired at the sleeve.

Doña Leonor Velasco looked her up and down.

“This is the nurse?”

Sofía did not answer the insult.

She looked at Mateo.

“I need everyone out.”

Nicolás stared.

“No.”

“No cameras. No servants. No family.”

“You are asking me to leave my son with a stranger.”

“I’m asking whether your need to control the room matters more than his pain.”

Nobody spoke to Nicolás like that.

Valeria touched his arm.

“Let her try.”

He gave Sofía one hour.

The door closed.

For five minutes, Sofía did nothing.

She watched.

Mateo arched when the blanket touched his neck.

His crying sharpened when a seam rubbed his wrist.

The redness followed fabric lines.

Not random.

Sofía removed one sleeve.

The screaming softened.

Then the other.

She removed the embroidered blanket.

Mateo took a longer breath.

She found a plain cotton hospital sheet in her bag and wrapped him loosely.

Within minutes, the baby stopped screaming.

Outside, Nicolás heard silence.

He opened the door with a master key.

Sofía stood by the window holding Mateo.

Sleeping.

Nicolás stopped breathing.

“What did you give him?”

“Nothing.”

“What did you inject?”

“Nothing.”

“Then how?”

Sofía pointed at the clothes.

“Take all of it out.”

Leonor stepped inside.

“What nonsense is this?”

Sofía picked up an imported fabric spray.

German label.

Lavender scent.

Chemical preservative.

“I think his skin is reacting to something used on his clothes.”

Valeria covered her mouth.

Nicolás looked at the bottle.

“Why didn’t the specialists see it?”

“Because every time he went to a hospital, he lay on plain medical sheets.”

Sofía looked at his records.

“His symptoms improved outside the mansion.”

Silence.

Then Leonor reached too quickly for the bottle.

Sofía noticed.

“So who has been spraying his clothes?”

Leonor’s hand stopped.

Nicolás looked at his mother.

“Answer her.”

Leonor lifted her chin.

“The staff.”

“Which staff?”

“I don’t know.”

Sofía looked at the bottle again.

The cap had fresh scratches.

A tiny sticker had been removed from the bottom.

Not factory.

Added later.

Then she saw something under the crib.

A black plastic disc the size of a coin.

She knelt.

Nicolás stepped forward.

“What is that?”

Sofía picked it up.

A tracker.

Leonor’s face changed.

Valeria whispered:

“Why would anyone put a tracker under a baby’s crib?”

Nicolás took it.

His expression went cold.

But Sofía was staring at the floor.

The tracker was dusty.

Old.

The chemical bottle was clean.

New.

She looked up.

“The tracker isn’t the trap.”

Nicolás narrowed his eyes.

“What?”

May you like

Sofía pointed toward the nursery wall.

“There’s something behind that panel.”
