Chapter 10 - Back to the Mansion

Rafael ordered the mansion evacuated.
Nicolás refused.
Then reconsidered.
Valeria and Mateo moved to a secure hospital.
Leonor too.
Most staff left.
Only police, federal agents, Rafael’s team, Nicolás, Sofía, and Esteban remained.
Why Sofía?
Daniel might trust the nurse he had been told about.
If he was there.
Then they reviewed old architectural plans.
The mansion had three sealed servant corridors.
One forgotten elevator.
Two underground storage rooms.
Tomás knew all of them.
He grew up there.
At 2:14 a.m., a perimeter alarm triggered.
No visible intruder.
Then the power went out.
Backup power came on.
One wing remained dark.
The old chapel.
Esteban whispered:
“Tomás used to hide there as a boy.”
They moved carefully.
Sofía stayed behind tactical officers.
Inside the chapel:
Nothing.
Then a child’s cough.
Behind the altar.
A hidden door.
Daniel was there.
Alone.
Terrified.
Sofía lowered herself.
“Daniel?”
He stared.
“You’re Sofía.”
“Yes.”
“She said you’d help.”
“Who?”
“Lucía.”
Sofía held out her hand.
Daniel stepped toward her.
Then stopped.
“My dad?”
Nicolás appeared behind her.
Daniel stared.
Nicolás looked like he had been shot.
“Daniel.”
The boy’s face hardened.
“Tomás says you didn’t want me.”
Nicolás swallowed.
“He lied.”
“Everyone lies.”
Fair.
Then Sofía said:
“You don’t have to believe him now.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You can leave with me.”
That worked.
He took her hand.
Then a click came from above.
Speaker system.
Tomás.
“Beautiful.”
Nicolás turned.
“Where are you?”
“Home.”
The mansion.
Not the chapel.
The whole house.
Then:
“Daniel was always the better lever.”
Nicolás looked at the boy.
Tomás continued.
“Mateo made you weak.”
“Daniel makes you guilty.”
Then:
“And guilt makes men sign anything.”
A printer started in the sacristy.
One page slid out.
Control transfer.
Then another.
Confession.
Nicolás admitting crimes.
Then another.
Resignation.
Tomás wanted signatures on all three.
Why?
Succession.
Criminal leverage.
Corporate control.
Then the archive timer reached one hour.
Tomás said:
“You can save your sons or save your empire.”
Nicolás answered:
“I’m done choosing between things you threaten.”
Tomás laughed.
Then gas hissed.
Sofía smelled it first.
Lavender.
Chemical.
“Aerosol!”
Masks on.
Daniel started coughing.
Sofía covered his face with her medical mask.
Rafael found the vent control.
Blocked it.
Then Sofía noticed something.
The gas was not meant to kill.
Same sedative aerosol.
Confusion.
Disorientation.
Perfect for forced signatures.
They retreated.
Outside the chapel, Nicolás looked at Sofía.
“What now?”
She said:
“Stop playing his game.”
Then:
“Release the archive yourself.”
Everyone stared.
Nicolás went still.
If he released the evidence, Tomás lost leverage.
But Nicolás could go to prison.
Lose companies.
Lose everything.
Sofía held Daniel’s hand.
“Your sons are not safer because your secrets survive.”
Nicolás looked at the mansion.
Then at his children’s file.
Then called his lawyer.
“Prepare disclosure.”
Rafael stared.
“All of it?”
Nicolás answered:
“All of it.”
Tomás had built the trap around Nicolás’s fear of exposure.
May you like
Nicolás was about to remove the trap.
By exposing himself.
