Chapter 14 - After the Mansion

Three years later, Nicolás was released under supervision.

The world had changed.

Velasco International no longer belonged to one man’s personality.

Independent board.

Audits.

No family control over trusts.

No private security without outside oversight.

No medical decisions through family offices.

Boring.

Useful.

The old mansion was sold.

Why?

Valeria refused to raise Mateo there.

Daniel hated it.

Leonor agreed.

Nicolás did not fight.

The buyer turned part of the property into a rehabilitation center funded through court settlements.

Not named Velasco.

Sofía insisted on that.

Then Nicolás visited the General Hospital.

No entourage.

One lawyer.

One driver.

Sofía saw him in the corridor.

“You look worse.”

He smiled.

“Good to see you too.”

“Prison food?”

“Terrible.”

Then silence.

Three years of letters.

Not romantic.

Updates.

Mateo.

Daniel.

Therapy.

Books.

Regret.

Sofía answered some.

Not all.

Then he asked:

“Coffee?”

She looked at the clock.

“Twenty minutes.”

That became a beginning.

Slow.

Embarrassingly normal.

No mafia fantasy.

No instant redemption.

Nicolás still had a violent history.

A criminal record.

Enemies.

He could not become a different man through romance.

He went to therapy.

Continued cooperation.

Worked as an adviser under legal restrictions.

No executive control.

Then Sofía learned to stop seeing him only as the worst system around him.

And stop excusing him because he loved his sons.

Both.

They argued often.

Money.

Security.

His instinct to solve everything.

Her refusal to be managed.

Once he sent a driver without asking.

She sent the driver back.

Nicolás apologized.

Did not do it again.

Progress.

Then Daniel asked if Sofía would move in.

She said no.

Nicolás looked amused.

Daniel complained.

“Why?”

“Because I like my apartment.”

“It’s tiny.”

“It’s mine.”

Nicolás nodded.

He understood.

Then Mateo started school.

No special imported uniform.

Cotton undershirts.

Dermatology plan.

The first day, he cried.

Nicolás almost pulled him out.

Sofía stopped him.

“He’s allowed to be scared.”

Nicolás looked at her.

Right.

Not every pain needs elimination.

Some needs support.

Then Leonor died peacefully at seventy-eight.

Before she died, she asked Sofía to visit.

“I was cruel to you.”

“Yes.”

“You never softened things.”

“No.”

Leonor smiled.

“That is why Nicolás listens.”

Then:

“I knew more than I admitted about your father.”

Sofía went still.

Leonor said she had suspected Alejandro ordered the intimidation.

Never spoke.

Fear.

Loyalty.

Privilege.

Sofía listened.

No forgiveness demanded.

Then Leonor said:

“I am sorry.”

Sofía answered:

“I believe you.”

Not absolution.

Truth.

Then after the funeral, Nicolás asked Sofía to marry him.

She said no.

He laughed.

Not offended.

“Too soon?”

“Wrong question.”

“What’s the right one?”

“Why marriage?”

He thought.

Then:

“Because I want a life with you.”

“Then live one.”

He smiled.

“Fair.”

A year later, he asked again.

She said yes.

No mansion.

No gold ceilings.

Small ceremony.

Mateo carried rings.

Daniel complained about the suit.

Valeria attended.

No old family alliance.

Just people.

Then Sofía wore one thing from her father.

His old hospital ID tag inside her bouquet.

May you like

Not glamorous.

Perfect.
