Chapter 6 - The Warehouse

Nicolás did not send his own men first.
That surprised everyone.
He called a federal contact.
Then the police.
Then private security.
Layers.
Sofía noticed.
Learning.
The warehouse was surrounded quietly.
The shipping yard belonged to Velasco International.
Officially bonded storage.
Unofficially used for sensitive cargo.
That made police involvement dangerous for Nicolás.
He did it anyway.
“Why?” Valeria asked.
He looked at Mateo.
“Because if I hide the yard, I protect Tomás.”
Good.
The raid began with fourteen minutes left.
Gabriel was found alive.
The timer was fake.
No explosive.
Psychological pressure.
Tomás had already left.
But the warehouse held something better.
Paper.
Servers.
Medical supplies.
Copies of Velasco trust documents.
Stacks of imported fabric conditioner.
A whole operation.
Then one wall showed photographs.
Nicolás.
Valeria.
Leonor.
Mateo.
Sofía.
Each with notes.
Weaknesses.
Habits.
Leverage.
Under Sofía:
Poor. Family debt. Younger brother in university. Can be bought?
Then handwritten:
No. Use threat.
Sofía read it.
Her stomach tightened.
Nicolás saw.
“Your family is protected.”
She turned.
“My family does not belong to you.”
He paused.
Then corrected.
“I’ll offer protection.”
Better.
She nodded.
Then another board.
Operation name:
CRADLE.
Objective:
Trigger succession instability.
Force Nicolás to transfer temporary voting control.
Create proof of incompetence if he refuses.
The plan included staged attacks on shipments.
Anonymous police tips.
Financial leaks.
Mateo’s illness.
The family crisis was one front in a corporate war.
Then Rafael found the control destination.
Arcos Meridian Holdings.
Tomás controlled 41%.
The rest belonged to investors.
Who?
One name shocked Nicolás.
Senator Álvaro Cárdenas.
Public anti-crime reformer.
Private investor in Tomás’s takeover.
Nicolás laughed coldly.
“Of course.”
Then Sofía found a sealed medical case.
Inside were pediatric skin samples.
Mateo’s.
Taken without consent.
Ferrer had been testing dose levels.
Dr. Márquez went pale.
“This is criminal experimentation.”
Sofía looked away.
Valeria started crying.
Nicolás did not move.
Then Rafael found another file.
Mateo was not the first child.
Two anonymized cases.
Both children of wealthy families.
Both developed mysterious contact reactions.
Both families transferred assets during crises.
Sofía stared.
“This is a method.”
Tomás’s network had used medical coercion before.
Then one case name emerged from old records.
Familia Duarte.
The child recovered.
The father died six months later in a car crash.
Nicolás looked at Rafael.
“Find the Duartes.”
Then a phone rang inside the warehouse.
Old landline.
Everyone froze.
Nicolás answered.
Tomás.
“You chose police.”
“Yes.”
“You disappoint me.”
“You poisoned a baby.”
“I created pain.”
Tomás sounded almost offended.
“I never intended to kill him.”
Sofía’s hands tightened.
Nicolás said:
“That distinction will not save you.”
Tomás laughed.
Then:
“You still think this is about Mateo.”
Pause.
“The baby opened the door.”
Another pause.
“The real target is downstairs.”
The call ended.
Rafael looked around.
“Downstairs?”
The warehouse plans showed no basement.
Then Sofía noticed a freight scale.
Too large.
Too new.
Rafael triggered the maintenance control.
The scale platform lifted.
A hidden elevator.
Below it:
A secure underground archive.
May you like
And inside were files labeled with one name.
NICOLÁS VELASCO.
