Chapter 4 - The Two Signatures

Leonor stared at the document.
“I never signed that.”
Nicolás looked at her.
“Your signature is there.”
“It is forged.”
Valeria whispered:
“My father’s too?”
They called Gabriel.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then Valeria received a message.
DON’T TRUST NICOLÁS.
She showed everyone.
Sender:
Her father.
Then another.
TAKE MATEO AND LEAVE.
Nicolás’s expression hardened.
Valeria said:
“That sounds like him.”
Sofía asked:
“Does he usually text in all capitals?”
Valeria blinked.
“No.”
Small detail.
Important.
Rafael traced the number.
Cloned SIM.
Then he examined the signatures.
The Leonor signature came from a charity foundation filing.
Gabriel’s came from a customs document.
Both copied.
Someone wanted Nicolás to suspect both families.
Divide them.
Why?
The transfer authorization shifted Mateo’s voting rights to an offshore management company.
Name:
Arcos Meridian Holdings.
Nobody recognized it.
Rafael traced ownership.
Layered shells.
Panama.
Curaçao.
Delaware.
Then one Mexican company.
Luz del Norte Logistics.
Nicolás knew that name.
His face changed.
Valeria noticed.
“What?”
Nicolás looked at Rafael.
“Close the door.”
Sofía held Mateo.
Nicolás said:
“Luz del Norte moves cargo for Velasco International.”
“Legal cargo?” Sofía asked.
Silence.
She understood.
Not always.
Then Nicolás continued.
“The company was introduced by my uncle, Tomás.”
Leonor whispered:
“No.”
Nicolás looked at her.
“My father’s brother.”
Tomás Velasco had disappeared from family business seven years earlier.
Officially retired to Spain.
Unofficially exiled after trying to take control.
Leonor sat.
“He swore he was done.”
Nicolás almost laughed.
“Men like Tomás are never done.”
Then Rafael found payments.
Arcos Meridian paid Dr. Adriana Ferrer.
Monthly.
For nine months.
Valeria covered her mouth.
“She was being paid.”
Then another payment.
To someone inside the mansion.
Recipient initials:
E.V.
Everyone looked at Leonor.
She stood.
“That is not me.”
Rafael checked.
Account owner:
Esteban Velázquez.
Don Esteban.
The elderly butler went white.
“No.”
Nicolás’s voice dropped.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Esteban’s hands shook.
“I received money.”
Leonor gasped.
“But not for this.”
“For what?”
“To send household schedules.”
“Why?”
“They said it was for family security.”
Nicolás laughed bitterly.
“From who?”
“Your uncle’s people.”
Esteban started crying.
“He told me he wanted to protect you from government surveillance.”
Rafael stared.
“You gave him floor plans?”
“Yes.”
“Camera locations?”
“Yes.”
“Vent access?”
Silence.
Nicolás stepped forward.
Sofía said:
“Nicolás.”
He stopped.
Barely.
Esteban whispered:
“I never knew they would touch Mateo.”
That sentence did not help.
Then Mateo woke and whimpered.
Sofía checked his skin.
Improving.
Good.
Then Rafael opened one more file from the USB.
A list of staff payments.
Esteban.
One guard.
One housekeeper.
One accountant.
Each sold something small.
Schedules.
Passwords.
Purchasing records.
Nobody sold a baby.
Together, they built a path to him.
Then the last payment.
Dr. Ferrer.
Amount:
$2.5 million.
Memo:
SUCCESSION EVENT.
Nicolás stared.
Tomás was not trying to kill Mateo.
He was trying to create a medical succession crisis.
Then Valeria’s phone rang.
This time, her real father.
Gabriel.
He was whispering.
“They have me.”
Valeria froze.
“Who?”
Then a man’s voice took the phone.
“Tell Nicolás to sign the control transfer.”
Nicolás grabbed the phone.
“Tomás.”
The voice laughed.
“Nephew.”
Then:
“Now you understand what the tracker was for.”
Nicolás looked at the black disc on the desk.
Tomás said:
“It was not tracking Mateo.”
May you like
Pause.
“It was tracking you.”
