Chapter 13 - The Trial of Power

Months passed.

Mateo recovered.

Plain cotton.

Unscented detergent.

No chemical-treated fabrics.

His skin healed.

The first time he laughed while wearing pajamas, Valeria cried.

Sofía did too.

Daniel entered therapy.

Slow.

Angry.

Suspicious.

Normal.

He eventually moved into a protected home with Valeria and Mateo while custody questions were resolved.

Why Valeria?

Because she was stable.

Because she agreed.

Because Daniel chose it temporarily.

Nicolás did not demand otherwise.

That mattered.

Then Tomás went to trial.

The evidence was overwhelming.

The warehouse.

Payments.

Medical files.

Kidnapping.

Trust fraud.

Lucía.

Adriana.

The tracker.

The archive.

He tried one defense.

Nicolás was worse.

Maybe true in some areas.

Irrelevant to Tomás’s charges.

Then Sofía testified.

Tomás smiled at her.

“Your father was brave.”

She stared.

“You don’t get to use him.”

His smile faded.

Then:

“You think Nicolás is different?”

Sofía answered:

“I think people are responsible for what they choose.”

Simple.

No sainthood.

Tomás hated it.

He was convicted.

Long sentence.

Then Nicolás’s own case moved separately.

Financial crimes.

Bribery.

Illegal shipments.

Some inherited.

Some authorized by him.

He admitted enough to avoid a spectacle.

He pleaded guilty to multiple charges tied to unlawful corporate conduct.

Not violence.

Not every rumor.

Real charges.

He accepted prison time.

The day before sentencing, he asked to see Sofía.

She agreed.

Public legal office.

No mansion.

No guards nearby.

He looked different.

Tired.

Human.

“I used to think power meant never needing anyone.”

Sofía smiled faintly.

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It was.”

Then:

“Mateo says your name.”

“He says sounds.”

“He says Sofía.”

“Valeria coaches him.”

Maybe.

Then Nicolás asked:

“Will you stay in his life?”

“If it’s healthy.”

He nodded.

Then:

“And mine?”

Silence.

He looked down.

“I should not have asked.”

“No.”

She thought.

“Ask me after you stop being his emergency.”

He looked up.

That was not a promise.

Not rejection.

A boundary.

He accepted it.

Then sentencing.

Nicolás received prison time, fines, asset restrictions, and a prohibition from controlling several corporate entities.

Velasco International was reorganized under independent leadership.

Legal divisions survived.

Illegal ones closed.

Workers received claims pathways.

Sofía’s father’s case ended with formal acknowledgment of wrongful interference and compensation to the Reyes family.

Sofía gave most of the money to her mother.

Used some to pay her brother’s tuition.

Kept some.

No shame.

Then the General Hospital promoted her.

She refused a private-clinic offer.

Valeria laughed.

“You enjoy suffering.”

“No.”

“I enjoy knowing why I’m there.”

Good answer.

Then Mateo turned two.

Birthday.

Small.

No mansion.

No gold-thread blankets.

Cotton shirt.

Cake everywhere.

Daniel sat beside him.

Valeria smiled.

Sofía arrived late from work.

Mateo ran toward her.

Nicolás was not there.

Prison.

His absence was real.

Nobody pretended otherwise.

Then a guard delivered a letter.

For Sofía.

She put it in her bag.

Did not open it until home.

One sentence:

Thank you for saving my son before you tried to save me from myself.

May you like

She read it twice.

Then folded it.
