Chapter 12 - The Car

The car was found in a locked warehouse two counties away.
Daniel did not go inside until detectives cleared it.
Even then, seeing his father’s black sedan under a dusty tarp nearly put him on his knees.
Three years vanished.
He could hear his father laughing in the driver’s seat.
Complaining about Daniel’s music.
Telling Clara, then five, that chocolate milk counted as breakfast if nobody told Grandma.
Park stood beside him.
“Forensics will do the real work.”
Daniel nodded.
“What can you see now?”
She pointed without touching. “Brake line looks newer than the surrounding components.”
“Newer?”
“Or replaced after the crash. We don’t guess.”
Proof.
Daniel was learning to love that word.
On a shelf in the back of the warehouse, investigators found archived job boxes from North Line Recovery.
One contained a work order tied to the sedan.
The customer name was a shell company.
The billing contact was Nathan Cole.
The instruction line read:
POST-LOSS TRANSPORT / NO INSURER CONTACT.
Daniel stared at it.
“Why preserve the car?”
Park said, “Leverage. Insurance. Blackmail. Criminals keep strange souvenirs.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Isabel.
“You okay?” she asked.
“No.”
“Good answer.”
He almost laughed.
Then she said, “Someone tried to access the hotel floor.”
Daniel straightened.
“Who?”
“Fake food delivery. Security stopped him.”
“Clara?”
“With me.”
“I’m coming back.”
“Police are here. Finish what you’re doing.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Months earlier, he would have ignored her and rushed home to feel useful.
Now he asked, “What do you want me to do?”
“Find the truth.”
So he stayed.
At the warehouse office, Park’s team found an old desktop computer.
The hard drive contained deleted invoices.
One payment originated from the Harper Foundation two days before Daniel’s father died.
Eighty-five thousand dollars.
Exactly what Isabel found.
Then a second file surfaced.
A scanned note in Nathan’s handwriting.
V says D.H. is forcing audit. Delay meeting permanently.
Daniel’s fingers went numb.
“V,” he whispered.
Park did not answer.
She didn’t have to.
Victoria.
His phone buzzed with a voicemail notification.
From his mother.
Daniel stared at it.
Park said, “Don’t delete anything.”
He played it on speaker.
Victoria sounded calm.
“Daniel, you’re making the same mistake your father made.”

A pause.
“He thought truth made him untouchable too.”
