Chapter 17 - The School Gate

Daniel called police before panic could make decisions for him.
Clara did not go to school the next morning.
Neither did half the Harper household, because there was no Harper household anymore.
There was only Daniel, Isabel, Clara, two detectives, and a kitchen table covered in plans.
Park studied the photograph.
“This could be a threat. Could be a message. Could be proof of surveillance.”
“Could be my mother getting close to my daughter,” Daniel said.
“Yes. Which is why we treat it seriously.”
Security footage from the school showed Victoria across the street wearing sunglasses and a gray coat.
She never crossed onto school property.
She watched for eleven minutes.
Then left in a car registered to a shell company linked to Nathan.
By afternoon, police found the car abandoned.
Inside was another envelope.
This one addressed to Clara.
Park opened it under evidence protocol.
A handwritten note said:
You were always my favorite. Your mother poisoned you against me.
Clara read it once and pushed it away.
“She tried to throw me.”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
Isabel crouched beside her. “You never owe someone love because they say they love you.”
Clara nodded.
Then she asked, “Is Grandma sick?”
Daniel looked at Isabel.
This answer mattered.
“She may have problems,” he said carefully. “But problems don’t make hurting people okay.”
Clara accepted that more easily than adults often did.
That evening, Nora called with news.
Nathan wanted to cooperate.
Not because conscience arrived.
Because the charges did.
“He says Victoria kept a second archive,” Nora said. “Original letters, trust papers, recordings. Insurance against everyone.”
“Where?” Isabel asked.
“An old storage unit under her maiden name.”
Police obtained a warrant.
Inside they found thirty years of secrets packed into banker boxes.
Private investigators’ reports.
Copies of Daniel’s emails.
Medical information about Isabel.
School schedules for Clara.
And a cassette tape labeled DAVID - FINAL.
David was Daniel’s father.
The tape had been recorded six days before his death.
Daniel listened with Isabel beside him.
His father’s voice crackled through an old player.
“If something happens to me, Victoria will tell Daniel I was tired, careless, maybe depressed. Don’t believe it.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
The tape continued.
“She thinks family means ownership. I should have stopped her years ago.”
A long pause.
Then David said, “Daniel, if you ever hear this, protect your child from the mistake I made with mine.”
Daniel stared at the machine.
Clara was not in the room.
Good.
May you like
Because what came next was worse.
David said, “Nathan has proof of the foundation theft. If he tells you he doesn’t, he’s already chosen her.”
