Chapter 9 - The Missing Words

The court did not play Clara’s copy immediately.

Evidence had rules, and rules felt cruel when the truth was sitting inside a child’s toy.

But Detective Park already had a forensic image of the memory card.

She testified that the original file contained a longer conversation recorded by Isabel.

The judge allowed the relevant portion.

Isabel’s real voice filled the courtroom.

“Victoria keeps telling Clara I’m sick. I swear, if Clara gets in my way again when I’m trying to document this, I don’t know what I’ll do. I can’t keep hiding papers in her toys.”

The room went silent.

The fake clip had removed everything after “again” and stitched the rest into a threat.

Nora turned toward Nathan.

“Where did your version come from?”

Nathan’s confidence cracked for the first time.

“My client received it anonymously.”

Victoria stared straight ahead.

The judge ordered an immediate independent psychiatric evaluation and suspended the prior commitment order pending review.

Daniel almost stood too fast.

“Does that mean she’s coming home?”

“It means,” Nora whispered, “the door is opening.”

By late afternoon, an independent psychiatrist had examined Isabel.

Two hours later, the report was blunt: no current basis for involuntary confinement.

Daniel waited outside Rosewood with Clara.

When the doors opened, Isabel walked out carrying a clear plastic bag containing four months of her life.

Clara ran.

“Mom!”

Isabel dropped the bag and fell to her knees.

They collided in a tangle of arms and tears.

Daniel stayed where he was.

He wanted to join them.

He had not earned the right to assume he could.

Isabel eventually looked up.

Her eyes met his.

“Thank you for bringing her.”

“Of course.”

Not I love you.

Not I’m sorry.

Not yet.

They moved Isabel and Clara to a secure hotel under police guidance while the house remained part of the investigation.

At 9:30 p.m., Park called.

“We searched Nathan Cole’s office.”

Daniel put the phone on speaker.

Isabel sat across from him.

“What did you find?” she asked.

“Document templates matching the forged commitment papers. Audio editing software. Payments from the foundation to Pike.”

Daniel looked at Isabel.

She did not look relieved.

“What else?”

Park hesitated.

“A draft affidavit.”

“About me?” Isabel asked.

“No.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“About who?”

“Clara.”

Park continued.

“It was designed to petition for temporary guardianship if both parents were deemed unavailable.”

Daniel went cold.

“Who was supposed to become guardian?”

Park did not need to say it.

May you like

But she did.

“Victoria.”
