Chapter 2 - The Recording

The paramedics arrived before Victoria found a new lie.

Daniel refused to let her touch Clara.

“I’m her grandmother,” Victoria snapped as an EMT checked Clara’s pupils.

“You’re the reason she needs an ambulance.”

“Daniel.”

“Back away.”

The command surprised even him.

Victoria had spent his entire life turning every disagreement into a question of loyalty. If he challenged her, he was ungrateful. If he asked for proof, he was cruel. If he chose anyone else, he was betraying blood.

But Clara was eight years old and still gripping his sleeve.

Blood had finally become a simple question.

Who had protected his child, and who had not?

A police officer named Ruiz took statements in the foyer while another officer photographed the staircase.

Victoria spoke first.

“She slipped while having a tantrum. Daniel arrived at the wrong moment.”

Clara shook her head furiously.

Officer Ruiz crouched to her height. “You don’t have to talk right now if you don’t want to.”

“I want to.”

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

Clara pointed at her. “She pushed me because I found papers in Dad’s office.”

“What kind of papers?” Ruiz asked.

“I don’t know. They had Mom’s name. And Dad’s name. But Dad didn’t write his name like that.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“How do you know?”

Clara looked almost offended. “Because you sign my school stuff.”

Ruiz glanced at Daniel. “Do you have access to the camera footage?”

Daniel did.

Or he was supposed to.

He opened the security app on his phone.

The live feed worked.

The recordings did not.

PASSWORD CHANGED.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I didn’t change this.”

Victoria folded her arms. “Maybe Isabel did before she left.”

Clara whispered, “Grandma did.”

Daniel looked at her.

“She was in your office last night. I saw her on my tablet camera.”

“You saw her change the password?”

“No. I saw her at your computer.”

Daniel turned to Victoria.

She laughed once. “This is absurd.”

Officer Ruiz asked, “Ma’am, do you have the current password?”

“No.”

Daniel walked toward the security cabinet hidden behind a paneled door near the study. The installer had once explained that the main recorder stored a local copy even if the cloud account changed.

He opened the cabinet.

The recorder was gone.

Only two loose cables remained.

Ruiz’s expression changed.

“When did you last see the unit?”

“Before my trip.”

Victoria said, “Maybe a technician removed it.”

Daniel stared at the empty shelf.

Then Clara tugged his hand.

“Dad, Grandma took a black box to her car last night.”

Victoria went white.

Ruiz stepped between her and the front door.

“Mrs. Harper, I’m going to need you to stay right here.”

Clara looked down at the toy car in her hand.

Then she whispered something only Daniel heard.

“I didn’t just find the papers.”

She turned the toy car over.

A tiny black memory card was taped underneath.

“I found this too.”
