Chapter 15 - The Dark

Daniel ran toward the memory of the door.

A hand caught his jacket.

He twisted free, slammed into a metal table, and heard Pike curse behind him.

Outside, police shouted.

“Daniel! Down!”

He dropped.

Flashlights cut through the mill.

Pike ran toward the river exit.

Victoria disappeared upstairs.

Daniel stayed on the floor until Park reached him.

“You hurt?”

“My dignity.”

“Good. Keep it cheap.”

Officers chased Pike into the loading yard.

Another team went upstairs.

They found an empty office, an open window, and a burning metal trash can.

The fire was contained quickly.

Inside were fragments of legal papers.

Not enough to read.

Daniel stared at the ash.

“The originals.”

“Maybe copies,” Park said.

He looked at her. “You really don’t let anyone guess.”

“That’s why you like me.”

He did not answer.

A shout came from outside.

Pike had been caught near the river fence.

Victoria had not.

Police found a second vehicle behind the mill with fake plates.

She had planned an exit.

In the passenger seat was a laptop.

On it, investigators discovered copies of the trust documents.

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

“She burned paper while carrying digital copies.”

“Control ritual,” Park said. “Some people destroy what others can see while keeping what they can use.”

The trust was real.

Clara was the primary future beneficiary.

Victoria had no ownership interest.

But there was more.

A clause stripped Victoria of all remaining governance rights if a court found she interfered with Daniel’s family for financial gain.

Isabel had been right.

The psychiatric scheme was not just revenge.

It was a pathway to guardianship and control.

That night, Pike requested an attorney.

Then, before the attorney arrived, he changed his mind about silence.

He wanted a deal.

Park called Daniel and Isabel to the station but made it clear they would not participate in the interview.

Afterward, she came out carrying a thin notebook.

“Pike says Nathan arranged the brake-line tampering on your father’s car.”

Daniel leaned against the wall.

“And my mother?”

“He says Victoria authorized a payment but never used the words ‘kill him.’”

Daniel laughed bitterly. “Convenient.”

“There’s more.”

Park opened the notebook.

“Pike kept a handwritten job log.”

“Why?”

“Insurance against Nathan.”

She pointed to an entry dated the night Daniel’s father died.

The note read:

V called after crash. Said: Make sure he can’t change anything now.

Daniel stared at the words.

Then Park turned the page.

Another entry appeared four months ago.

The night Isabel was taken.

It said:

NO FORCE. DRUG IF NEEDED.

Daniel looked up.

Park’s expression was grim.

“Your wife may have been medicated before Rosewood ever evaluated her.”
