Chapter 4 - Seventy-Two Hours

Daniel played the sentence three times.

Once because he couldn’t believe it.

Twice because he needed to hear the exact words.

Three times because betrayal sounded different when it came from someone who had toasted your wedding.

Nathan Cole had been his father’s attorney. Then Daniel’s. He had handled the company merger, Victoria’s estate plan, Clara’s trust, almost everything Daniel believed was too sensitive for strangers.

And now Nathan’s voice was on Isabel’s hidden recording.

Officer Ruiz asked, “Where is your wife now?”

“Rosewood Behavioral Center.”

Park looked it up. “Private facility. About forty miles north.”

Daniel stood. “I’m going there.”

Ruiz blocked the door with one hand. “You’re going to call first.”

“I’ve called for four months.”

“And what do they tell you?”

“That she doesn’t consent to contact.”

Park said quietly, “If the commitment papers were forged, the facility may be acting on false information. But storming in could make it harder.”

Daniel hated that she was right.

They called.

A nurse transferred them to administration.

Then to legal.

Then to a man who introduced himself as Dr. Adrian Kessler.

“Yes,” Kessler said, “Mrs. Harper is a patient here.”

Daniel’s throat tightened. “I want to speak to my wife.”

“I’m afraid she has asked not to speak with you.”

“Put her on the phone and let her tell me.”

“That would not be clinically appropriate.”

Daniel looked at Ruiz.

Ruiz leaned toward the speaker. “Doctor, this is Officer Javier Ruiz. We have reason to believe documents connected to Mrs. Harper’s admission may have been forged.”

Silence.

Then Kessler said, “That’s a serious allegation.”

“Yes.”

“Our legal department will need written notice.”

Daniel’s patience snapped. “You have my wife locked in a building because someone signed my name to a lie.”

“Mr. Harper, your wife was not admitted solely on your statement.”

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?”

“There were independent observations.”

“From who?”

“I can’t discuss confidential records over the phone.”

Park typed something into her laptop.

Daniel said, “Was one of them my mother?”

Kessler did not answer.

“Was one of them Nathan Cole?”

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Park turned her laptop around.

“I found something.”

A public licensing page showed Adrian Kessler’s professional history.

Seven years earlier, he had served on the board of a nonprofit mental-health initiative funded by the Harper Foundation.

Victoria’s foundation.

Daniel felt sick.

Ruiz’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, then looked at Daniel.

“The officers at your house detained your mother.”

Daniel exhaled.

Ruiz wasn’t finished.

“They searched her car with consent from the prosecutor.”

“And?”

“They found the missing security recorder.”

Daniel felt the room tilt.

Ruiz continued.

“But they also found something else.”

“What?”

“A patient access badge.”

He looked Daniel directly in the eye.

“For Rosewood Behavioral Center.”
