Chapter 10 - The Evening Bottle
At the hospital, Dr. Priya Shah explained that the drug could cause dangerous sleepiness in an infant.
"Who prepares his evening bottle?" Brooks asked.
"Usually me," Elena said. "Sometimes the night nurse. Victoria insisted on doing it twice last week."
Police tested the formula, water filter, and bottle warmer.
Clean.
Then they swabbed a glass dropper found in Victoria's bathroom.
Positive.
Her lawyer claimed it was hers.
Dr. Shah shook her head. "The formulation was prescribed for a child."
Pharmacy records revealed the prescription belonged to Leo.
The doctor who signed it was Andrew Keller, the family's private pediatric consultant.
Marcus stared at the name. "Keller told me Leo needed no medication."
Officers went to Keller's home.
Empty.
His passport had been used at O'Hare before sunrise.
He was detained during a connection in Montreal.
Within hours, he asked for a deal.
Keller admitted altering Leo's records and prescribing sedatives off-book.
"Why?" Brooks asked over video.
"Grant paid me. Victoria gave instructions."
"What were they trying to do?"
Keller swallowed.
"Make the child appear medically fragile. Make the house appear unsafe."
Rachel found a draft court petition on Pike's drive.
It asked a judge to declare Marcus temporarily unfit to manage Leo's trust because of repeated safety failures.
Emergency trustee: Grant's company.
Supervisor of Leo's care: Victoria Hale.
Marcus finally understood.
They did not need Leo dead.
