Chapter 13 - The Locker
Police opened Grant's storage locker that evening.
Inside were ledgers, encrypted laptops, surveillance photos, and a fireproof case.
One ledger listed payments in Grant's handwriting.
Keller - medical.
Pike - archives.
Northline - narrative.
Victoria - principal.
Then came the entry dated eleven days before Amelia's crash.
VEHICLE RESOLUTION - 450K.
Marcus sat down on an overturned crate.
The fireproof case contained a private agreement between Grant and Victoria. It described how Marcus's family assets would be controlled if he became unable to manage them.
They had built a replacement system around his life before Amelia was dead.
Elena found a photograph of herself beside Amelia.
On the back Grant had written:
LOYAL. HARD TO MOVE.
Below it, in Victoria's handwriting:
Then break trust between her and M.
The missing schedules. The complaints. The whispers that Elena was obsessed with Leo.
The pool was not the first attempt to frame her.
It was the last step.
Marcus read the note.
"She knew I'd turn on you."
"She studied you," Elena said.
"And she knew I'd hit you?"
Elena's voice became firm. "No. That's yours. Don't give her ownership of it."
He lowered his eyes.
Brooks opened the final box.
Inside was a recorder labeled A.H. - LAST MEETING.
Amelia's voice came first.
"I know about the shell companies, Grant."
Grant answered, "You should stop digging."
Then Victoria's voice entered.
"If she won't stop, we solve the problem."
