Chapter 6 - The House Was Listening

At 12:47 a.m., Marcus's home stopped being a mansion and became a crime scene.

Police sealed the nursery, pool terrace, security office, and garage.

Rachel Kim arrived with two attorneys and a hard black case chained to her wrist.

Victoria watched from the library sofa.

"This is theater," she said.

Rachel did not look at her.

"No. Theater has an audience that paid to be entertained."

Marcus almost smiled.

Almost.

Rachel opened the case on the dining table. Inside were two encrypted drives, a sealed court petition, and instructions written by Amelia.

"Before I unlock anything," Rachel said, "we need an independent sweep of the house."

Grant's security team protested.

Brooks removed them from the property.

At 1:20, technicians from an outside firm began scanning walls, vents, outlets, and furniture.

They found the first microphone inside Marcus's office lamp.

The second was beneath the library desk.

The third was in the nursery.

Elena stared at the tiny device inside a decorative wooden moon above Leo's crib.

"Someone listened to him sleep."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Someone listened to us talk around him."

The technician found a fourth transmitter under the kitchen phone.

Then a fifth inside Elena's room.

She went pale.

"Why me?"

Victoria spoke from behind the officer guarding the hall.

"Because you snoop."

Brooks turned sharply. "Interesting word choice."

Victoria blinked. "What?"

"Snoop. You didn't say 'maybe someone thought she snooped.' You said she does."

"Everybody knows she does."

Elena's eyes narrowed.

"How would you know what I do in my room?"

Victoria said nothing.

Rachel connected Amelia's first encrypted drive to an isolated laptop.

A password prompt appeared.

Marcus tried Amelia's birthday.

Wrong.

Their wedding date.

Wrong.

Leo's birthday.

Wrong.

Elena looked at the screen.

"Try 'blue cup.'"

Marcus frowned. "What?"

"Blue cup. Lowercase."

The drive unlocked.

Marcus stared at her.

"How did you know?"

Elena looked suddenly embarrassed.

"When Leo was born, Amelia couldn't get him to take a bottle unless she drank water from this ugly blue plastic cup at the same time. She called it their deal."

Marcus remembered the cup.

He also remembered throwing it away after Amelia died because seeing it made him angry.

The drive opened to a single folder.

CONTROL.

Inside were contracts, invoices, spreadsheets, and photographs.

Rachel opened the first spreadsheet.

Payments flowed from Hale Residential Security into five companies Marcus had never heard of.

Over four years: $31.6 million.

Every invoice had Grant Mercer's approval.

But that was not the worst part.

The recipient companies all shared one hidden beneficiary.

Rachel clicked the corporate registry file.

The name appeared on screen.

Victoria Serrano.

Victoria Hale's maiden name.

Marcus turned toward his wife.

She did not look surprised.

She looked angry.

Then one of the technicians called from the nursery.

"Mr. Hale? We found something else."

Marcus entered the room.

The technician stood beside the wall behind Leo's crib.

A narrow panel had been removed.

Inside was a small black router connected to the home's private network.

And taped beneath it was a photograph of Amelia's car.

Across the windshield, someone had written one word in red marker.

NEXT.
