Chapter 8 - Not an Accident

The crash that killed Amelia had been blamed on rain and mechanical failure.

Now police reopened the case.

The deleted service record traced unauthorized access to Mercer Protective Technologies—Grant's old company.

Brooks called her lieutenant. "Get a warrant for every Mercer system tied to that vehicle."

A crash sounded from the library.

Victoria had tried to smash her phone against a table.

An officer recovered it before she could destroy it completely.

A message was still visible on the cracked screen.

UNKNOWN: You said the maid would take the fall. Fix this.

Victoria's face went blank.

Marcus read it over Brooks's shoulder.

Then another message arrived.

UNKNOWN: Grant is compromised. Use the tunnel.

Marcus looked toward the cellar.

The estate had an old service tunnel leading to a detached garage. Almost nobody knew it existed.

Police rushed downstairs.

Halfway through the tunnel, officers found someone running with a backpack.

Not Grant.

Daniel Pike, the estate's operations manager.

Inside his bag were cash, passports, a laptop, and a hard drive filled with security backups.

Marcus stared at him. "Why do you have my cameras?"

Pike said nothing.

Brooks opened a folder on the drive.

STAFF.

There were files on twenty-three employees.

Elena's was the largest.

At the bottom was a police report dated tomorrow.

It accused Elena Reyes of intentionally pushing Leo into the pool.

The report had been written before the incident happened.
