Chapter 18 - What Amelia Chose
The guardianship document named Marcus first.
Then, if he died, became incapacitated, or was removed for serious misconduct, it named Elena Reyes as Leo's independent child advocate and backup guardian after Amelia's sister.
Elena stared at the page. "I'm a housekeeper."
Rachel shook her head. "You were a licensed pediatric nurse before moving here. Amelia knew you couldn't afford recertification. She set aside money for it."
Elena looked at Marcus.
"I never received anything."
Rachel's voice hardened. "Grant blocked the disbursement after Amelia died."
Another stolen future.
Marcus said, "We'll restore it."
Elena corrected him. "The trust will restore it. Not you."
He nodded. "Right."
Two weeks later, Elena filed an assault complaint against Marcus.
Tabloids called it betrayal.
Marcus called it accountability.
He entered a court diversion program, accepted counseling and penalties, and issued a public statement without excuses.
I struck Elena Reyes while she was the person who had just saved my son's life. Fear does not excuse violence. I was wrong.
Elena did not praise him.
She didn't need to.
Grant pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, and charges tied to Amelia's crash.
Thomas resigned from the board and faced separate prosecution.
Hale Group lost a federal contract after investigators exposed his misconduct.
A reporter later asked Marcus whether Elena had destroyed his family's reputation.
He stopped walking.
"Elena didn't destroy anything," he said. "She turned on the light."
That night Sam Ortega called Elena.
"I found another clip on the hedge camera."
Her stomach tightened.
"From the pool?"

"No," Sam said.
"From the night before Amelia died."
