Chapter 12 - The Corridor

Elliot fired once over his shoulder.
The bullet punched into the concrete wall beside my head.
I stopped being brave.
I dropped behind a parked SUV as Ruiz and two officers came down the ramp.
Elliot jumped into a delivery van and crashed through the exit gate.
Police chased him for six miles before losing him in industrial traffic.
Back upstairs, Marcus was still alive.
He looked at me and whispered, "Now you know who is cleaning up."
Ruiz said, "Finish the story."
Marcus nodded weakly.
"Claire survived the fall. She would have survived the night. But after thirty-six hours, she started vomiting, losing consciousness. The pressure in her skull was rising. She needed surgery."
"And you did nothing," I said.
"I gave her medication."
"For pain?"
He started crying.
"To keep her quiet."
The monitor jumped with his pulse.
"What medication?" Ruiz asked.
Marcus turned his face away.
"Enough morphine to stop her breathing."
I heard the words, but my mind rejected them.
Vanessa had hit Claire.
Elliot had trapped her.
Marcus had killed her.
"Why sign a death certificate?"
"I needed an internal record to close the controlled-substance log. I wrote the cause as complications from the head trauma. Vanessa kept a copy because she didn't trust me. Elliot arranged the false-name cremation."
"And the emails?"
"Vanessa. Mostly. Elliot handled corporate signatures."
Marcus gripped my wrist.
"There is one thing they never found. Claire said Noah would know. She kept saying it, even when she was barely conscious. Noah would know."
Back at Rachel's house, I told Noah only what he needed to know.
Not the morphine.
Not yet.
He sat very still.
"Mom said I would know?"
"Do you?"
He stared at Claire's old compass chain lying on the table.
Then his eyes widened.
"Her books."
"What books?"
"She used to hide my birthday money in books and make clues. She always said, 'If you're lost, go to the map.'"
Claire's apartment had one map book.
A huge red world atlas our father gave us as children.
When Noah opened it, a section had been cut out of the pages.
Inside was a black flash drive.

And a handwritten label.
THIRTEEN MONTHS.
