Chapter 18 - The Last Hour
Marcus denied it.
Then the lake-house evidence proved Vanessa was telling the truth.
Crime scene technicians recovered a small battery-powered camera from the hidden room. The memory had been damaged, but not destroyed.
The final hour of video had no sound.
I watched it with Ruiz in an evidence room.
Claire lay on the mattress, barely moving.
Marcus injected something into her IV line and left.
For twenty-three minutes, Claire did not move.
Then her hand twitched.
She opened her eyes.
She pulled the IV from her arm.
She tried to stand.
She fell.
Vanessa entered the room.
Claire reached for her.
Vanessa knelt beside her.
For almost a minute, the two women faced each other.
No audio. No way to know what Claire said.
Then Vanessa stood and left.
Claire remained alive for another forty-one minutes.
Elliot entered last.
He carried a pillow.
I turned away from the screen.
"Stop it."
Ruiz stopped the video.
That was the real ending.
Not the fall.
Not Marcus's morphine.
Elliot had made sure Claire never spoke again.
When confronted, he asked for a lawyer and said nothing else.
Vanessa gave police the location of Claire's ashes in exchange for prosecutors noting her cooperation.
She had hidden the urn inside my father's family mausoleum, behind a loose marble panel near his name.
"Why there?" I asked through the phone in the interview room.
Vanessa's answer came softly.
"Because I couldn't throw her away."
I hated her for saying something almost human.
The next morning, forensic technicians recovered the urn.
Inside, mixed with the ashes, was a partially burned metal tag from the crematorium marked MARA COLE.
Enough to link the remains to the false record.
Ruiz called me that evening.
"Daniel, Marcus signed a full confession. Elliot's attorney is discussing a plea. Vanessa is still negotiating."
"So it's done?"
"The criminal part is getting there."
I heard hesitation.
"What?"
"We found one more file on Claire's flash drive. It was hidden in a damaged partition."
"Another video?"
"Yes. Addressed to you."
I closed my eyes.
"Send it."
Ruiz said, "Daniel, there's something you should know before you watch it. Claire recorded it the afternoon before she died."

"What does she say?"
"She says she knew you had already been warned."
