Chapter 13 - Thirteen Months

The flash drive was encrypted.
Noah knew the password.
"Mom's favorite question," he said. "What do you do when you're lost?"
The answer was FIND NORTH.
The drive opened.
It contained bank ledgers, shell-company registrations, copies of internal emails, audio recordings, and photographs of Vanessa meeting Elliot outside a private bank.
Claire had built a complete case.
At the top was a folder named 13 MONTHS.
Inside were thirteen scheduled-message drafts, one for each month after June 14.
They were templates.
Vanessa had copied them.
Claire had written them before she died as part of a contingency plan for a corporate investigation--messages that were supposed to go to lawyers and regulators if she failed to cancel them.
Vanessa and Elliot intercepted the account, changed the recipients, and turned Claire's own emergency plan into a disguise.
That explained why her fake messages had sounded almost right.
They had started with Claire's words.
Then twisted them.
Noah opened the thirteenth folder.
There was a video file.
Claire appeared on screen, alive, sitting in her office.
"If this file opens," she said, "I have been silent for thirteen months. That means someone found a way around my first twelve alerts. It also means the person opening this is probably Noah."
Noah stopped breathing.
Claire smiled at the camera.
"Happy thirteenth birthday, bug. I hope I'm standing behind you making fun of how dramatic this is."
He began to cry.
I put a hand on his shoulder.
Claire's expression became serious.
"If I'm not there, listen carefully. The proof is not the money. Money can be explained. The proof is the proxy token. It records every physical authentication. Nobody can fake the device log."
She held up a small black security key.
"I hid mine where Vanessa would never look. With someone she thinks Daniel no longer trusts."
The video ended.
I knew exactly who Claire meant.
Our mother.
There was only one problem.
Our mother had dementia and lived in a locked memory-care facility.
When I called the facility, the nurse sounded confused.
"Mr. Carter, your wife picked your mother up an hour ago."
"My wife?"
"Vanessa. She said you approved the outing."

I looked at Ruiz.
Vanessa had my mother.
