Chapter 17 - What Noah Carried

Noah had worn the bracelet for thirteen months.

Claire gave it to him the morning before she died.

Brown leather. Cheap brass clasp. Nothing special.

At least that was what we thought.

Ruiz used a pocketknife to pry open the clasp.

Inside was the Carter Meridian proxy token.

Noah stared at it like it might explode.

"She put it on me."

"Because nobody would search a kid," Ruiz said.

"Because Vanessa thought Mom didn't trust me with important things."

Vanessa, sitting on the ambulance bumper with her ankle wrapped, looked away.

The token log was devastating.

Every time Claire's digital signature had been used after June 14, the physical authentication came from a cloned backup device registered to Elliot's office.

Claire's original token had not been used once.

The fake approvals collapsed.

So did the subsidiary sale.

By evening, Elliot was in custody on attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping-related charges, and a growing list of financial crimes.

Vanessa was arrested as soon as the hospital cleared her.

Marcus remained under guard.

It should have felt finished.

It didn't.

We still didn't know where Claire's ashes were.

Vanessa refused to say.

She only agreed to speak after her lawyer arrived.

Ruiz let me watch from behind the interview-room glass.

Vanessa looked exhausted, stripped of makeup, hair smoke-stained and tangled.

"I did not plan to kill Claire," she said. "I hit her with Richard's cane because she came at me for the drive. She fell. I panicked."

Ruiz asked, "Why move her to the lake house?"

"Elliot said a hospital would ask questions. Marcus said he could watch her overnight."

"And when she got worse?"

Vanessa's mouth trembled.

"I wanted to call 911."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Why?"

Vanessa looked straight at the glass, as if she knew I was behind it.

"Because Marcus said Daniel would lose the company, Noah would lose everything, and I would go to prison."

Ruiz said, "So you let Claire die."

Vanessa whispered, "Yes."

Then she added, "But Marcus is lying about one thing."

Ruiz leaned forward.

May you like

Vanessa's eyes stayed on the glass.

"Claire was still alive after he gave her the morphine."
