Chapter 9 - The Trust

The plan suddenly made terrible sense.

If Claire's death became official, Noah inherited her shares and I controlled the company.

If Claire remained "alive" but unreachable, her digital signature could be used in the dark while Vanessa, Elliot, and Marcus moved money and assets wherever they wanted.

They didn't need Claire.

They needed her name.

Susan requested an emergency board meeting for the next morning.

By midnight, the attack started.

A video appeared online.

Claire sat in front of a blank white wall, looking tired but alive.

"My brother Daniel has been harassing me for more than a year," she said. "I left because I was afraid of him. He is trying to declare me dead to seize my shares and my son's inheritance."

I watched it three times.

Noah watched once.

"That's not Mom."

It looked like her.

It sounded like her.

But the rhythm was wrong. Claire always rushed the word "because." The woman in the video slowed down before it.

Ruiz called. "Don't post anything. Don't answer reporters. We are analyzing the file."

By 8:00 a.m., cameras were outside my house.

At 9:00, Carter Meridian's board gathered by video and in person. Elliot Price sat at the far end of the table, calm as a priest.

"Daniel," he said, "given the allegations made by your sister, I think you should recuse yourself."

I placed the medical death certificate on the table.

"I think you should explain why a dead woman signed a seventy-million-dollar sale two days ago."

The room erupted.

Elliot didn't blink.

"That document is unfiled and unverified. Claire is clearly alive. We all saw her statement."

"Then call her."

"Excuse me?"

"Call Claire. Right now. Put her on speaker."

Elliot's jaw tightened.

Before he could answer, Susan stepped in and handed me a printed report from a forensic video analyst Ruiz had hired.

The fake Claire video contained rendering artifacts around the mouth and ears.

Synthetic face replacement.

AI-generated voice layers.

But the background was real.

The analyst had enhanced a reflection in a black television screen behind "Claire."

In the reflection stood a woman holding the camera.

Vanessa.

And behind Vanessa was a wall of framed photographs I recognized immediately.

They belonged to her mother's condo on Harbor Street.
