Evelyn did not deny it.

She sat in Rebecca’s conference room the next morning while Daniel’s arm rested in a sling and Lily slept in a nearby office with Naomi.

“I paid a man after Hannah died,” Evelyn said.

Daniel stared at her.

“Who?”

“An insurance investigator named Paul Mercer.”

Rebecca’s expression sharpened. “Why?”

“He found evidence that the brake failure might not have been accidental. He said if he reported it, reporters would tear through the company, the foundation, everything.”

“So you bribed him.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I paid him to sign a confidentiality agreement and turn his files over to our attorneys.”

Daniel stood so quickly his chair scraped back.

“You buried evidence about my wife’s death.”

“I thought I was protecting the family.”

“There it is again.”

“Daniel—”

“No. You were protecting a name. A company. A stock price.”

Evelyn covered her face.

“I didn’t know Victoria and Mason were involved.”

“But you made sure nobody could find out.”

The scheduled package on Mason’s phone contained copies of Evelyn’s payment, internal legal memos, and messages from an old Morgan attorney discussing how to keep the accident out of the press.

Mason had kept them as insurance.

Rebecca said quietly, “If this goes public, the board will have to open a separate investigation. Regulators may come in.”

Daniel looked through the glass wall at the city below.

Morgan Holdings had been his father’s life, then his responsibility. Thousands of employees depended on it.

Evelyn whispered, “You can stop the message.”

Daniel turned.

She knew what she was asking.

Protect the company.

Hide the truth again.

He thought of Hannah’s letter.

He thought of Lily in the kitchen, being told to lie for someone she loved.

Then he thought of the sentence he had repeated to his daughter all week.
