Chapter 5 - Someone Inside Morgan Holdings

Morgan Holdings occupied the top nine floors of a glass tower downtown.
Daniel entered through the parking garage after dark with Rebecca and Leon Park, the company’s head of cybersecurity.
Leon pulled the access logs in a secure conference room.
“The request to Dr. Carter’s portal came through our executive network,” he said.
“Whose machine?” Daniel asked.
“That’s the problem. The session used your credentials.”
Daniel stared at him.
“I was in Chicago that night.”
“I know.”
Leon brought up badge records.
Daniel’s physical badge had entered the twenty-eighth floor at 11:14 p.m.
Daniel reached into his wallet.
His badge was still there.
“Cloned?” Rebecca asked.
“Or a temporary duplicate,” Leon said. “Only executive security can issue one.”
They checked surveillance video.
At 11:13 p.m., Mason Reed stepped off the elevator.
He wore a baseball cap and kept his head down, but his face was clear when he looked toward the camera.
Daniel’s hands curled around the edge of the table.
“Keep going.”
At 11:46, Mason entered the records room.
At 12:08, another person arrived.
Victoria.
Daniel felt something in him collapse quietly.
She kissed Mason’s cheek, took a folder from him, then entered Daniel’s office using a second access card.
Rebecca said, “They knew exactly what they were looking for.”
Leon froze the frame.
The folder carried the logo of Morgan Family Trust.
Daniel’s father had created the trust before his death. Daniel controlled the voting shares of Morgan Holdings, while Lily held a protected future interest inherited through her mother, Hannah.
Rebecca sat forward.
“Daniel, if someone got you declared incompetent or dangerous, who becomes temporary guardian of Lily’s trust interest?”
Daniel answered slowly.
“Her legal parent or court-appointed guardian.”
“And if you’re removed?”
He understood.
“Victoria.”
Leon opened another audit trail.
“There’s more.”
Someone had downloaded confidential board documents the same night, including proxy procedures for removing a chief executive during a criminal investigation.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Victoria was not only building a custody case.
She was preparing to take his daughter, his voting control, and his company at the same time.
Then Leon pulled up one final camera angle.
A third person had been waiting inside Daniel’s office.
Thomas Vale.
