Chapter 20 - In Her Own Words

The meeting lasted seven minutes.

Victoria sat behind a table in a secure visitation room, thinner than Daniel remembered, with no makeup and no perfect smile.

Lily entered holding Daniel’s hand.

Victoria began crying immediately.

“Lily, sweetheart—”

Lily raised one hand.

“No.”

Victoria stopped.

Daniel felt Lily’s fingers squeeze his.

“I came because I wanted to say it myself,” Lily said.

Victoria nodded quickly. “Okay.”

“You told me Daddy would stop loving me if I didn’t help you.”

“I was scared. I made mistakes.”

“You told me to lie.”

Victoria looked at Daniel. “I never wanted to hurt her.”

Lily’s voice stayed small but steady.

“Don’t talk to Daddy. I’m talking.”

Daniel nearly broke right there.

Victoria lowered her eyes.

Lily continued.

“You said good girls help their moms. But Naomi says good people don’t make kids responsible for grown-up secrets.”

Victoria cried harder.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily looked at her for a long moment.

“I hope you become better. But I don’t want you to be my mom anymore.”

Daniel felt the pain of the sentence and the freedom inside it.

They left without looking back.

A year later, Morgan Holdings had survived under new leadership. Daniel sold part of his controlling interest and used a portion of the proceeds to create an independent foundation for children involved in coercive custody disputes and family fraud cases.

Evelyn remained in Lily’s life, but only after months of therapy and boundaries Daniel no longer apologized for.

Some relationships healed.

Some did not.

Daniel learned that both outcomes could be honest.

On a bright Saturday morning, Lily sat at their new kitchen table recording a video for her first-grade science project.

Her cardboard solar system leaned crookedly behind her.

Daniel held the phone.

“Ready?”

Lily nodded, then frowned.

“What?” he asked.

“My teacher gave us a script.”

Daniel’s chest tightened for half a second.

Lily noticed.

Then she smiled.

“Can I say it in my own words?”

Daniel lowered the phone and smiled back.

“Always.”

She took a breath.

“My name is Lily Morgan, and this is what I think.”

May you like

Daniel pressed record.

This time, nobody told her what to say.
