Chapter 4 - The Doctor Who Never Met Him

By midnight, Daniel and Lily were in a hotel suite across town.
Officer Ramirez had not arrested Victoria, but he had documented the video, photographed Lily’s wrist, and advised Daniel to stay somewhere else until attorneys sorted out the next step.
Daniel called Rebecca Sloan.
She had been his attorney since his father died and had the rare ability to sound calm while telling people their lives were on fire.
“Send me everything,” she said.
“I already did.”
“Good. Do not call Victoria. Do not call Mason. Do not post anything.”
“I want them away from my daughter.”
“Then give me facts, not rage.”
At eight the next morning, Rebecca met him outside Dr. Naomi Carter’s office.
Naomi was in her fifties, tired-eyed and direct.
She read the report bearing her signature and immediately pushed it away.
“I did not write this.”
Rebecca leaned forward. “Did you evaluate Daniel Morgan?”
“No.”
“Have you ever met him?”
“Until five minutes ago? No.”
Daniel felt his pulse in his throat.
“Did you see Lily?”
Naomi hesitated.
“Twice.”
Daniel stood. “Without my permission?”
“Victoria told my office she had authority to consent.”
“For what?”
“She said Lily was having nightmares after witnessing violent arguments.”
Daniel stared at the floor.
Naomi opened Lily’s notes.
“Both sessions were unusual. Lily kept repeating polished phrases that did not sound like a six-year-old.”
“What phrases?” Rebecca asked.
Naomi read from the file.
“‘My father creates an unsafe emotional environment.’”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“That’s Mason’s language.”
Naomi nodded. “I thought she had been coached. I documented that.”
She turned the monitor toward them.
Her original note said exactly that.
But below it was an access log.
Someone had entered Naomi’s patient portal four nights earlier, downloaded Lily’s files, and exported her electronic signature image.
Rebecca pointed to the IP address.
“Can you identify that?”
Daniel could.
He had seen the range thousands of times.
“It belongs to Morgan Holdings.”
Naomi’s expression hardened.
“Then someone inside your company stole my signature.”
Daniel looked at Rebecca.

Victoria’s plan was no longer inside his house.
It had reached his office.
