Chapter 19 - Hannah’s Voice

Daniel waited until morning.
He did not want to hear Hannah’s voice alone in the dark.
Lily sat beside him on the couch with Mr. Moon, now badly stitched where Mason had ripped him open.
“You don’t have to listen,” Daniel told her.
“Is it Mommy?”
“Yes.”
Lily nodded. “I want to.”
Daniel pressed play.
For a few seconds, there was only room noise.
Then Hannah spoke.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, either I became embarrassingly paranoid or I was right.”
Daniel laughed and cried at the same time.
That was Hannah. Even afraid, she made jokes.
She explained Larkspur, Mason, Victoria, and her planned meeting with investigators. She did not know anyone intended to hurt her. She only knew she had made dangerous people nervous.
Then her voice softened.
“And Lily, if you’re old enough to understand this someday, I need you to know something. Being kind does not mean letting people rewrite what happened to you.”
Lily looked at Daniel.
The recording continued.
“Your dad loves hard. Sometimes that makes him trust too hard too. Help him remember that love without truth isn’t love. It’s fear wearing nice clothes.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
Hannah laughed softly on the recording.
“And Daniel, stop making that face. I know the face.”
Lily smiled through tears.
The final words were quieter.
“Whatever happens, make home the place where Lily never has to rehearse the truth.”
The file ended.
Daniel sat frozen.
Lily climbed into his lap.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“Did Mommy know Victoria was bad?”
“She knew Victoria was doing bad things.”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Does that make you dumb?”
Daniel laughed despite everything.
“A little.”
Lily considered that.
“Okay.”
Then she hugged him.
Months later, prosecutors offered Victoria a plea agreement in exchange for testimony against Mason.
She accepted.
But before sentencing, she asked for one thing.
A final supervised meeting with Lily.
The therapist said Lily should decide.
Daniel expected her to say no.

Instead, Lily surprised him.
“I want to tell her something.”
