Chapter 6 - The Friend at the Desk

Daniel found Thomas the next morning in a private club three blocks from the river.

Thomas looked like he had not slept.

Daniel slid a printed surveillance image across the table.

Thomas stared at it.

“You want to explain?”

“It’s not what it looks like.”

Daniel almost smiled. “Everybody keeps saying that.”

Thomas rubbed both hands over his face.

“Victoria told me you were sick.”

“What kind of sick?”

“She said you were blacking out. Getting violent. She said Mason was preparing documents to protect Lily if you had some kind of breakdown.”

“So you gave them access to my office?”

Thomas looked away.

Daniel leaned forward. “Did you?”

“Yes.”

The word landed harder than shouting would have.

“Why?”

“Because they had something on me.”

Rebecca, seated beside Daniel, said, “What?”

Thomas swallowed.

“Payments.”

He explained that eighteen months earlier, he had approved a series of consulting invoices without proper review. The vendor, Larkspur Advisory, looked legitimate. Later he learned the company was a shell.

“How much?” Daniel asked.

“Four point eight million.”

Daniel felt the room tilt.

Four point eight million was not a bookkeeping error. It was a road, a plan, a life someone had built in secret. Daniel thought about every time Victoria had called him paranoid for checking a number twice, every time Mason joked that Daniel cared too much about control. They had been training him to doubt the instincts that might have exposed them.

“Where did it go?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try again.”

Thomas’s eyes filled with shame.

“I found out six months ago. Mason showed me copies of my approvals and said if I refused to cooperate, he’d tell the board I stole it.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Thomas pulled a flash drive from his pocket.

“I started copying records.”

Daniel did not touch it.

Thomas pushed it closer.

“There are transfers, deleted emails, and old vendor records. Larkspur existed before you married Victoria.”

Daniel frowned.

“How long before?”

Thomas looked directly at him.

“Before Hannah died.”

The room went silent.

Daniel’s first wife had died in a car crash three years earlier.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Daniel, Hannah was asking questions about Larkspur the week she died.”

Daniel forgot how to breathe.

“What are you saying?”

May you like

Thomas looked at the flash drive.

“I’m saying your wife knew Victoria Reed before you did.”
