Chapter 12 - FRANK'S LAST RECORDING
The recording was stored on an old phone Jason had hidden in a safe-deposit box.
He turned it over through counsel after negotiating limited use protections for the act of production, not for any crimes the recording might reveal.
Mara explained the distinction twice because I was too stunned to follow the first time.
Frank's voice sounded weak but clear.
He said Diane had pressured him to sign new estate papers while he was medicated.
He said he feared money had been removed from family trusts.
Then he said Jason knew.
"My son keeps telling me it is temporary," Frank said on the recording. "He says Diane will put the money back before anyone notices. He does not understand that helping someone hide theft makes you part of it."
Jason sat across from me during the supervised review and stared at the table.
Frank continued.
"If anything happens to me, Emily is the one I trust to protect Lily from this family. She sees what Jason refuses to see."
I covered my mouth.
Frank had known.
He had watched me being isolated, criticized, and slowly trained to doubt myself.
And he had known Jason would not stop it.
The recording ended with one final instruction.
"Look behind the back panel of my workshop cabinet."
Police and the probate attorney arranged access to Frank's old workshop, now used by Diane for storage.
Behind a screwed-in wood panel, they found a small lockbox.
Inside were original trust statements, letters to the independent bank, and a handwritten ledger tracking transfers Frank believed Diane had made without authorization.
There was also a flash drive.
The files on it showed emails between Diane and Jason.
In one, Jason wrote: Move it from Lily's account first. Emily never checks anything.
I read that line three times.
Three years of marriage collapsed into seven words.
Emily never checks anything.
He thought I was stupid.
Worse, he thought my trust in him was stupidity.
Jason began cooperating fully after that email surfaced.
Not because he had suddenly become brave.
Because he finally understood he could not save himself by protecting Diane.
Brooke followed two days later.
She admitted Diane had told her to create the fake airline reservation and photograph Lily from across the street.
She insisted she believed they were "building a custody case."
Then Brooke gave investigators something nobody expected.
A voice memo Diane had accidentally sent her during the week after the birthday dinner.
Diane's voice was furious.
"If Emily gets custody, Jason loses control of Lily's trust. That child is the only reason any of this matters."
The room went silent.
Lily had never been the granddaughter Diane wanted to raise.
