Chapter 7 - ROSA'S NOTEBOOK
Rosa Alvarez had cleaned Diane's condo every Tuesday and Friday for eleven years.
She knew where Diane hid spare keys, which cabinet held emergency cash, and exactly how the Bennett family behaved when guests were gone.
According to Elena, Rosa had kept notes.
Not because she expected a lawsuit.
Because she was afraid she would forget dates.
On March 3, Diane grabbed Lily by the wrist after she touched a vase.
On April 18, Diane slapped Lily's hand hard enough to make her cry for ten minutes.
On June 7, Jason watched Diane lock Lily alone in a dark guest bathroom for what Rosa estimated was four minutes.
I had never known about the bathroom.
The thought of my baby in the dark made me shake so hard Nora took the phone from my hand.
Mara arranged to meet Rosa at a legal-aid office away from Diane's neighborhood.
Rosa arrived carrying a grocery bag.
Inside was a black spiral notebook.
Every page was dated.
Every entry was written in careful Spanish.
Mara brought an interpreter and had copies made immediately.
Then Rosa showed us the threat.
A text message from an unknown number said her son Mateo could "lose more than his delivery job" if Rosa helped me.
Mateo had been followed twice after work.
"I am scared," Rosa admitted. "But I am more scared for that little girl."
I wanted to hug her.
Instead, I asked what Diane had said after locking Lily in the bathroom.
Rosa looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"She told Jason, 'Emily has to learn that this family raises children our way.'"
"And Jason?"
"He said, 'Just don't leave marks.'"
The words landed harder than any slap.
Jason had not merely failed to stop Diane.
He had helped manage the evidence.
That afternoon, Mara filed Rosa's declaration under seal and asked the court for tighter protective conditions.
At six, Jason sent a message through the court-approved parenting app.
I miss Lily. I want to be her father. Please stop punishing me for my mother's mistakes.
I stared at the screen until the words blurred.
Then a second message arrived.
I know what Mom did in the bathroom was wrong.
Mara called me thirty seconds later.
"Do not answer him."
"Why?"
"Because he just admitted knowledge of an incident we never told him Rosa described."
There was silence on the line.
Then Mara said, "Emily, Jason is not outside this. He is inside it."
Before I could respond, Nora opened the apartment door and froze.
A large envelope lay on the floor.
No stamp.
No return address.
