Chapter 3 - THE MONEY THEY NEVER KNEW ABOUT

Jason thought he had found my secret.

He had only found the part I wanted him to find.

Six months earlier, after Diane shoved me against a refrigerator during an argument and Jason told me I was "too sensitive," I opened an account in my name only.

Every payday, I moved a small amount into it.

Not enough to trigger Jason's attention.

Enough to build an escape fund.

Mara asked me how much was there.

"Forty-five thousand dollars."

She raised one eyebrow.

"From your salary?"

"Mine, plus a tax refund, plus money my grandmother left me before I married Jason. I kept records."

"Good. That is not the problem he thinks it is."

Then she asked the question that mattered.

"Did you ever tell him you were leaving?"

"No."

"Did you ever threaten to take Lily from him?"

"No."

"Did he know about Diane's earlier behavior toward Lily?"

I opened a folder of screenshots.

Jason had answered my concerns with the same phrases for years.

Mom is old-school.

She means well.

Stop keeping score.

You know how she is.

Mara read them without comment.

By noon, she had filed for an emergency order of protection for Lily and me, requested temporary exclusive decision-making authority, and demanded immediate preservation of Brooke's livestream account and Diane's building security footage.

At one-fifteen, a child-protection investigator named Elena Ruiz arrived at Nora's apartment.

Lily hid behind my knees when Elena entered.

"I am not here to scare her," Elena said softly.

She sat on the floor and let Lily decide the distance between them.

When Elena reached for a toy block, Lily flinched so hard she fell backward.

Elena saw it.

So did I.

My daughter had learned to expect pain from an adult hand.

The realization nearly crushed me.

Then Elena asked whether Diane had struck Lily before.

I showed her three photographs.

One bruise on Lily's upper arm after Diane "caught" her near the stairs.

One faint mark on her thigh after a potty-training accident.

One red patch across her wrist from a day Diane had insisted she was "teaching manners."

I had confronted Jason each time.

Each time, he had made me doubt what I saw.

At four, Mara called.

The emergency judge had granted a temporary no-contact order against Diane.

Jason could request supervised parenting time, but Lily would not be returned to his home that day.

For the first time since dinner, I breathed.

Then Elena's phone rang.

She listened, frowned, and looked at me.

"Emily, I need to ask you something uncomfortable."

"Ask."

"Jason just submitted a video of you screaming at Lily in your kitchen. He says you are the violent parent."

I stared at her.

I had never seen the video.

May you like

But I knew exactly when it had been recorded.
