Chapter 4 - THE VIDEO THEY EDITED

The kitchen video came from the worst night of my life before Diane's birthday.

Lily had been eighteen months old and burning with a fever.

Jason was drunk.

Diane had arrived without calling and insisted I was "babying" Lily by holding her.

When I asked Diane to leave, Jason blocked the doorway.

I remembered shouting.

I remembered Lily crying.

I remembered a glass shattering behind me.

What I did not remember was being filmed.

Elena showed me the clip Jason had submitted.

It lasted nineteen seconds.

In it, I was crying and yelling, "Stop! Stop right now! Don't touch her!"

The frame was cropped so tightly that only Lily and I could be seen.

It looked terrible.

"There's more," I said.

Elena watched me carefully.

"How do you know?"

"Because I wasn't yelling at Lily. I was yelling at Jason."

I searched my evidence folder and found a photograph from that night.

A broken wineglass lay beside the refrigerator.

Behind it, reflected in the stainless-steel door, Jason was visible with one hand on Lily's blanket.

Diane stood behind him.

Mara immediately demanded the original video file and metadata.

Jason's attorney refused.

That refusal lasted less than two hours.

By evening, a forensic consultant working for Mara found something even better.

Jason had once backed up his phone to our shared desktop computer.

I had copied that backup months earlier after discovering he was deleting text messages.

The full kitchen video was still there.

Forty-six seconds.

The missing section showed Jason trying to pull feverish Lily from my arms while Diane shouted that a cold bath would "teach her body to stop acting dramatic."

It also showed Jason throwing a glass against the wall when I refused.

My screaming had not been abuse.

It had been protection.

Mara sent the complete file to Elena and Jason's lawyer with one sentence.

Please advise your client that altered evidence may have consequences.

At nine that night, Jason called Nora from a blocked number.

Nora did not answer.

He left a voicemail.

"Emily, Mom is scared. Brooke is losing clients because people saved the livestream. You have made your point. Come home and we can fix this privately."

Then his voice changed.

"And if you keep humiliating us, I will tell the court what really happened to your mother."

I replayed that last sentence three times.

Nora went pale.

Mara, listening through my laptop, asked, "What happened to your mother?"

I looked at my sister.

For twenty years, Nora and I had never spoken about that night outside our family.

May you like

Jason had just told me he knew.
