Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO SAVED THE VIDEO

I did not sleep.

At six the next morning, I sat at Nora's kitchen table with coffee turning cold between my hands while Lily slept on the couch with a stuffed rabbit tucked under her chin.

The unknown number had sent one more message during the night.

My name is Claire. I was watching Brooke's livestream. I screen-recorded it because something felt wrong before the slap happened.

I called.

Claire turned out to be Brooke's college roommate, someone I had met once at a Christmas party and forgotten.

"I thought Diane was being mean," Claire said. "Then she hit Lily. Brooke ended the stream, but my phone kept recording what had already aired. I have thirty-seven minutes."

"Thirty-seven?"

"The slap is not the worst part."

My fingers tightened around the mug.

Claire sent the file.

I watched Diane spend twenty minutes criticizing the way I fed Lily, the way I dressed her, the way I had apparently stolen Jason from his family.

I watched Jason laugh weakly when Brooke called me "the charity case he married."

Then I watched the slap.

On video, it looked even worse.

Lily did not spill the soup until Diane grabbed her arm.

Diane had caused the accident herself.

Then came the part I had never heard because I had been carrying Lily toward the elevator.

Jason picked his glasses out of his soup and whispered, "She planned this."

Brooke asked, "The bag?"

"She packed before dinner," Jason said. "She wanted Mom to lose control."

Diane answered, "Then we tell everyone Emily attacked me first."

My stomach turned cold.

At eight-thirty, I walked into Mara Klein's office with forty-one files, Claire's video, Lily's medical report, and three years of fear stored on an encrypted drive.

Mara was in her fifties, silver-haired, small, and calm in the way that made nervous people talk too much.

She watched the livestream once.

Then she watched the last two minutes again.

"Do you own the condo?" she asked.

"No. Diane does."

"Joint accounts?"

"Jason and I have one checking account. My paycheck goes there."

"Can he empty it?"

I opened my banking app.

The balance had been $18,420 the night before.

It was now $211.

Mara's expression did not change.

"He already did."

My phone rang.

Jason.

I answered on speaker.

"Emily," he said, breathing hard. "You need to bring Lily home right now. Mom filed a police report. She says you assaulted her and kidnapped our daughter."

Mara leaned toward the phone.

"Jason," she said, "this is Mara Klein. Your wife is represented now. Choose your next sentence carefully."

There was a long silence.

Then Jason said something that made Mara reach for a legal pad.

"Fine. Then ask Emily why she has been secretly moving money for six months."
