Chapter 5 - THE OLD WOUND JASON TRIED TO USE

My mother died when I was twelve.
Officially, it was a fall down the basement stairs.
Unofficially, she had been running from my father during an argument.
Nora and I had heard the shouting from upstairs.
We had heard the crash.
We had spent years believing that if we had called the police sooner, she might still be alive.
Jason knew only the official story.
At least, I thought he did.
"Who told him?" Nora asked.
I knew before she finished the question.
Diane.
Three years earlier, Diane had convinced me to tell her about my childhood during what she called a "heart-to-heart."
I had mistaken curiosity for kindness.
Mara did not ask for every painful detail.
She asked one legal question.
"Is there anything in that history suggesting you harmed your mother?"
"No. I was a child."
"Then this is intimidation, not leverage."
The next morning, Diane's version of events appeared online.
Brooke posted a long statement claiming I had a "history of uncontrolled rage," had attacked a sixty-two-year-old woman on her birthday, and was using Lily to punish a loving family.
She never mentioned Lily's injury.
She never mentioned the medical report.
She definitely never mentioned the livestream.
But the internet had already saved it.
Clips spread faster than Brooke could delete them.
People froze the frame showing Diane's hand on Lily's face.
Someone synchronized the video with Brooke's statement and titled it "The Part They Forgot to Mention."
By lunchtime, Brooke had turned off comments.
That should have felt like victory.
It did not.
Because Jason arrived at Nora's building at two-ten.
The doorman called upstairs.
"He says he has court papers."
Mara told me not to go downstairs.
A process server could deliver papers without Jason being present.
Jason knew that.
He came anyway.
For twenty minutes, he stood in the lobby holding a stuffed bear for Lily and staring at the elevator.
Then he left.
The bear stayed behind.
Nora wanted to throw it away.
I almost agreed.
Then I noticed a hard plastic seam under one ear.
Mara told us not to touch it.
A private investigator arrived forty minutes later, opened the bear inside a clear evidence bag, and found a small Bluetooth tracker sewn beneath the stuffing.
The device was registered to an account using Brooke's email address.
Mara stared at the investigator's report.
"This family keeps giving us gifts," she said.
Then her phone buzzed.
Her expression hardened.
"Jason has filed for emergency custody."
"On what grounds?"
She looked up at me.
May you like
"He claims you are planning to flee Illinois with Lily tomorrow morning."
