Chapter 11 - The Safe at Lake Geneva

Adrian wanted Claire nowhere near Lake Geneva.
Claire refused to stay behind.
"I spent three weeks being told I couldn't trust my own mind," she said. "I am not spending another night waiting for people to decide what I can handle."
So they went with Ruth, Noah, and two security officers.
The lake house sat dark above the water, shutters closed against the November wind.
Adrian had not entered his father's study in years.
The safe was hidden behind a framed sailing map.
He knew the code because his father had used the same four digits for everything: Adrian's birthday.
The lock clicked.
Inside were ledgers, old contracts, and a sealed envelope with Adrian's name on it.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The letter was dated twelve years earlier.
Son,
If you're reading this, then your mother has probably convinced you I was cruel, unstable, or disloyal. Some of that may be true. But there is one thing you must know: Evelyn has been moving money through family charities without authorization. I stopped her once. I do not know if I can stop her forever.
Adrian sat down.
Claire touched his shoulder.
The ledgers documented millions diverted through shell foundations. Not enough to collapse the family empire. Enough to explain Evelyn's obsession with control.
Then Noah found a newer folder behind the old books.
The paper was recent.
"These were added this year," he said.
Inside were printouts of the descendant-trust provisions, board voting maps, and a timeline of Claire's pregnancy.
Weeks were marked in red ink.
Twenty-four weeks: begin dependency.
Thirty weeks: isolate.
Thirty-four weeks: establish instability.
Thirty-six weeks: trigger review.
Claire sat down hard.
"She scheduled me."
Adrian's stomach turned.
At the bottom of the timeline was one final line.
Birth: activate guardian petition.
Ruth took photographs.
"This is devastating evidence."
A security officer called from the hall.
"Mr. Vale? We have movement outside."
Adrian stood.
Headlights swept across the windows.
A car had pulled into the drive.
Noah checked the security feed on his phone.
"It's Evelyn."
Claire's face drained of color.
Adrian moved toward the door.
Ruth caught his arm. "Do not confront her alone."
Too late.
The front door opened downstairs.
Evelyn's voice echoed through the house.
"Adrian? I know you're here."
Then another voice followed hers.
May you like
A man's voice Adrian recognized from childhood.
His father's former attorney.
