Chapter 3 - The Signature

The nursery smelled like fresh paint and cedar drawers.
Adrian had chosen the pale green walls because Claire said blue felt like a promise they had not earned yet. They had lost one pregnancy before this one. Neither of them liked tempting fate.
Claire opened the bottom drawer of the small writing desk.
Inside was a cream folder stamped VALE FAMILY HOLDINGS - PRIVATE.
Adrian pulled out the first document.
It was a medical power of attorney.
Claire's name appeared at the bottom.
Her signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
"That's not mine," she said.
Adrian knew. Claire crossed the second "l" in her name with a long careless stroke. This signature did not.
The next document was worse.
A temporary financial authorization allowing Evelyn Vale to manage accounts belonging to Claire "during pregnancy-related incapacity."
The third was a statement from a private therapist Adrian had never heard of, describing Claire as "emotionally unstable, suspicious, and increasingly unable to make sound decisions."
"You've never seen this therapist?"
Claire laughed once, but there was no humor in it. "I have never seen any therapist named Martin Greeley."
Adrian's phone buzzed.
His chief of staff, Noah Lin.
"Boss, sorry to hit you right after landing, but something strange came through Legal."
"What?"
"A request to prepare an emergency governance memo in case you become unavailable during the birth."
Adrian looked at the papers.
"Who requested it?"
"Your mother. She said you approved it in Singapore."
"I didn't."
Noah went quiet.
"There is more," he said. "The memo says that if both you and Claire are incapacitated, temporary voting control of the Vale Family Trust goes to Evelyn."
Claire's fingers closed around Adrian's sleeve.
The Vale Family Trust owned twenty-eight percent of Vale Meridian, Adrian's company. His late father had written the trust so that their first child would eventually inherit the shares.
Adrian had always treated that clause like distant estate planning.
Now it looked like a target.
"Freeze every governance change," he told Noah. "Nobody signs anything. Nobody deletes anything. Preserve email, access logs, all of it."
"Understood."
Adrian hung up.
Claire whispered, "She kept saying I was tired. Confused. Forgetful."
"When?"
"Every day. In front of staff. On calls. She'd move things, then ask why I couldn't remember where I put them."
Adrian felt sick.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Claire looked at him.
"I tried."
He frowned.
She walked to the nightstand and pulled out her phone.
"Look at our message thread from last week."
He did.
Several messages from Claire were missing.
She watched his face.
"She had your phone password, Adrian."
He started to deny it.
May you like
Then he remembered Singapore, the night he had fallen asleep during a video call, his phone left on the hotel desk while Evelyn's assistant had delivered files.
Claire said quietly, "I think she was editing our marriage while you were away.
