Chapter 15 - The Insurance Room

The storage unit looked ordinary from the outside.

Inside, it looked like a private intelligence office.

Metal shelves lined the walls. Banker boxes were labeled by last name. Photographs. Printed emails. Copies of tax returns. Legal settlements. Medical information. Old scandals.

Evelyn had spent decades collecting leverage.

Noah stared at the rows. "This is how she stayed untouchable."

Detective Ortiz corrected him. "This is how she thought she stayed untouchable."

One shelf was devoted entirely to Adrian.

A folder marked A - CONTROL contained lists of executives considered loyal to him, notes about his temper, copies of private messages, and even a handwritten page titled PRESSURE POINTS.

Claire's file was thicker.

Adrian could barely touch it.

Inside were photos of Claire leaving prenatal appointments, notes on her sister's finances, background checks on friends, and a printed draft of the separation agreement.

"How did she get this?" Claire whispered.

Ruth looked furious. "My office is investigating."

Then Ortiz found a small digital recorder in a locked drawer.

The most recent file was dated two weeks earlier.

Evelyn's voice filled the unit.

"Marcus, if Claire leaves before the baby is born, the plan collapses. She must remain in the house."

Marcus answered, "What if Adrian comes back early?"

"He never comes back early."

Claire and Adrian looked at each other.

The recording continued.

Marcus asked, "And after the birth?"

A pause.

Then Evelyn said, "Once the petition is filed, I only need seventy-two hours."

"For what?"

"To move the votes."

Noah swore.

Evelyn had planned to use temporary guardianship to swing control of the descendant trust during a board window.

A seventy-two-hour corporate coup built on a pregnant woman's manufactured breakdown.

Ortiz stopped the recorder.

"That's conspiracy evidence."

Adrian should have felt victory.

Instead, his phone rang.

Hospital security.

"Mr. Vale, we have a problem."

"What?"

"Mrs. Vale left her room."

Adrian's heart stopped.

"Claire is with me."

The guard sounded confused.

"Not Claire. Your mother."

Adrian stared at the phone.

"My mother isn't a patient."

"She is now. She came into the ER twenty minutes ago claiming chest pain."

Ortiz's eyes narrowed.

May you like

The guard continued.

"And she just disappeared from observation.
