Chapter 16 - Floor Seven

They reached the hospital in twelve minutes.

Security had locked down the maternity floor.

Evelyn had used a patient gown, a stolen staff badge, and years of confidence to move farther than anyone expected.

She was found on Floor Seven.

Outside Claire's room.

In her hand was a manila envelope.

Adrian stopped at the end of the hall.

"Don't move."

Evelyn turned.

She looked exhausted now. Hair loose. No pearls. No perfect blouse. For the first time, she looked like a seventy-year-old woman who had run out of rooms to control.

"I came to talk to Claire."

"You came disguised as a patient."

"Because you surrounded her with guards."

"For a reason."

Claire appeared behind a nurse at the far doorway. She had returned earlier with Ruth under security escort.

"What's in the envelope?" Claire asked.

Evelyn looked at her.

"Truth."

Adrian almost laughed.

"That's a new product for you."

Evelyn ignored him and held the envelope out to Claire.

"Your husband is not innocent."

Claire did not take it.

Evelyn dropped it on the floor.

Documents slid out.

Old legal settlements.

Adrian recognized company names.

His father had buried environmental claims, worker injuries, and bribery allegations. Evelyn had evidence.

"You see?" she said. "This family survives because someone is willing to do ugly things. Your husband only hates me because he wants to believe his hands are clean."

Adrian stepped closer. "Whatever my father did does not excuse you."

"No. But it explains me."

"It doesn't."

Claire picked up one page.

Then she stopped.

"Adrian."

He saw the date.

Three years ago.

After his father's death.

A settlement signed by Adrian himself.

His chest tightened.

Claire looked at him. "You knew about this one?"

He did.

A logistics accident. Two injured workers. A quiet payout.

He had told himself he was protecting the company while the facts were disputed.

Evelyn watched them.

"There," she whispered. "No clean hands."

Then Claire doubled over.

The paper fell.

A rush of fluid hit the floor.

Dr. Patel's voice snapped from behind the nurses.

"Her water just broke.
