Chapter 12 - The Attorney Who Knew

Thomas Bell was seventy-two, silver-haired, and trembling.
Adrian had not seen him since his father's funeral.
Evelyn stood beside him in the foyer, wrapped in a camel coat.
"You brought company," she said when Adrian appeared on the stairs.
"You brought a witness."
Thomas looked miserable. "Adrian, I should have called you years ago."
Evelyn turned on him. "We discussed what you would say."
"No," Thomas replied. "You discussed it. I listened."
Claire came down the stairs with Ruth.
Evelyn's gaze locked on her belly.
"You shouldn't be here."
Claire almost laughed. "You really don't get to say that anymore."
Thomas took an envelope from inside his coat.
"Your father asked me to hold this if anything happened to him."
Adrian stared.
"Anything did happen. Eleven years ago."
"I was afraid."
"Of her?"
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
That was answer enough.
The envelope contained copies of financial records and a signed affidavit from Adrian's father. He had discovered Evelyn diverting money from a charitable foundation into private accounts. He had planned to confront her publicly.
He died of a heart attack three days later.
No accusation of murder.
No proof of anything beyond fraud.
But one sentence in the affidavit changed the room.
If Evelyn ever gains financial control through my descendants, the trust should be frozen pending independent review.
Ruth read it twice.
"This could stop the guardianship strategy completely."
Evelyn laughed, but her voice cracked.
"A dead man's bitterness is not law."
"Maybe not," Ruth said. "But the attached trust amendment is."
Evelyn's face went white.
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Your father executed it the week before he died."
Adrian felt rage and grief collide inside him.
"You buried this."
Thomas whispered, "Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn threatened to expose things about your father that would have destroyed the company."
"What things?"
Evelyn answered.
"Things your father actually did."
Adrian turned to her.
She smiled again, but there was desperation in it now.
"You think you found a clean hero in that safe? You found a man who bought silence, buried lawsuits, and used judges like dinner guests."
Adrian said, "Maybe. But this is about what you did to Claire."
Sirens sounded faintly outside.
Evelyn's expression changed.
"You called the police?"
"No," Adrian said.
Claire looked toward the window.
The sirens grew louder.
Then Adrian's phone rang.
Detective Ortiz.
"Mr. Vale, get everyone away from the windows."
May you like
"Why?"
"Marcus says Evelyn didn't come alone.
