Chapter 9 - The Whole Point

The board meeting was scheduled for four that afternoon.

Adrian attended by secure video from the hospital conference room.

Claire insisted on listening from the adjoining room with Ruth.

Evelyn appeared on screen wearing navy blue, pearls, and the expression of a woman prepared to discuss quarterly earnings.

"This is a painful family matter," she began, "but Vale Meridian cannot be held hostage by Adrian's private instability."

Adrian said nothing.

She presented Marcus's statement.

She presented the forged report.

She presented screenshots of Claire crying.

Then she said, "My concern is the child."

Adrian finally leaned toward the camera.

"Then you will appreciate hearing Claire's voice."

Evelyn's expression changed by less than an inch.

Noah played the recording.

The room on screen went still.

Once Adrian signs the Singapore closing, he will be too exposed to fight us quickly.

Then: The baby is the whole point.

A board member named Helen Ward removed her glasses.

"Evelyn, would you like to explain that?"

"It has been edited."

"We have the original file metadata," Noah said. "And a forensic copy is already with counsel."

Evelyn's voice sharpened. "You are letting a frightened pregnant woman destroy this family with secret recordings."

Claire appeared in the doorway behind Adrian.

"No," she said. "You did that yourself."

Evelyn stared at her through the screen.

For a moment, the polished mask vanished.

"You ungrateful little girl."

Adrian saw three board members react.

Claire did not flinch.

"You drugged me."

"I helped you sleep."

There it was.

Not a full confession.

Enough.

Ruth's eyes snapped toward the screen.

"Thank you," she murmured.

Evelyn realized too late what she had said.

The meeting dissolved into shouting.

The board suspended Evelyn's advisory privileges pending investigation.

Adrian expected relief.

Instead, his phone rang before the meeting even ended.

Detective Lena Ortiz.

"Mr. Vale, we found Marcus Dean's car."

"Where?"

"Near Waukegan Harbor."

Adrian's stomach dropped.

"Was he in it?"

"No."

"Then what did you find?"

Ortiz paused.

"A passport, twenty thousand dollars in cash, and a burner phone."

"Whose number was on it?"

"Your mother's."

Adrian looked through the glass toward Claire.

Ortiz continued.

"But that's not the strange part. The last outgoing text wasn't to Evelyn."

May you like

"Who was it to?"

"Your wife's obstetric clinic.
