Chapter 1 - The Sale

Laura Vale heard the words "the house is sold" three seconds before she threw her father's crystal tumbler into the pool.
It hit the blue water with a clean, expensive splash.
"You did what?" Laura's voice cracked across the patio. "Say it again. I want Mom to hear every word."
Their mother, Eleanor, stood under the striped umbrella with one hand pressed to her chest. Evelyn hovered beside her, clutching an old family photograph so tightly the frame dug into her palm.
"I sold the estate."
"The closing is Monday."
"You had no right."
"I had every legal right."
Laura crossed the space between them and shoved him in the chest. "Dad trusted you. He made you executor because he thought you would protect this place."
"Stop."
"No. You stop. You stop deciding what the rest of us get to know."
"Laura," Evelyn said softly.
"You don't understand what I'm protecting."
"Then explain it."
Eleanor finally spoke. "Mark, if there is something I should know, you will tell me now."
Mark reached inside his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope, yellowed at the edges. Across the front, in Daniel Vale's sharp handwriting, were four words:
FOR MARK. NO ONE ELSE.
Laura stared at it. "Dad wrote that?"
"Two weeks before he died."
"And you hid it for a year?"
"I followed his instructions."
"Of course you did. You always loved being the chosen son."
He held out the letter.
Then the alarm inside the estate began to scream.
From the side drive, a black SUV shot past the hedges, tires spitting gravel. Evelyn dropped the family photograph as Laura ran toward the house with Mark on her heels.
"Call the police!" Mark shouted.
The safe behind the painting was open.
Files covered the floor. Drawers had been ripped out. The laptop Mark had brought from the city was gone.
On Daniel's desk sat a wet crystal tumbler.
Laura stopped cold. It was the same one she had just thrown into the pool.
Mark looked at Laura, then at the open safe.
"The letter," he said.
Laura's hand went to her pocket.
