Chapter 9 - The Grave

Laura drove too fast.
Anna followed in her own car, and by the time they reached the cemetery, Detective Ruiz was already there. Evelyn stood beside him under an umbrella, soaked from the knees down.
Eleanor sat on the ground at Samuel Mercer's grave, holding a sealed envelope.
Eleanor looked up.
"I lied about Daniel's last night."
The official story was simple. Daniel had suffered a heart attack in his study after dinner. Eleanor found him on the floor. Ambulance records confirmed he was dead by the time paramedics arrived.
"What did you lie about?"
"He wasn't in the study."
"He was here," Eleanor said. "At this grave."
"Anna."
"I knew you when you were a child."
"You knew my father too."
Eleanor nodded.
"He came here because Samuel's birthday was the next morning. Daniel did that every year after Samuel died."
"You never told us."
"He was ashamed."
"And then?"
"I followed him."
"Why?"
"Because he said he was going to the FBI."
Eleanor continued. "He had a confession. Names. Transfers. Everything."
"Where is it?"
"I don't know."
Anna looked at the envelope in Eleanor's hand. "What's that?"
"A copy of something Daniel left in my car that night."
Inside was a pharmacy receipt from a private medical clinic. Daniel's name was printed at the top. A medication Laura recognized from his heart treatment had been filled two days before he died.
"What's wrong with this?"
"Daniel didn't take that strength. He couldn't. His cardiologist had lowered it six months earlier."
"Mrs. Vale, are you suggesting he was given the wrong medication?"
"I'm saying he collapsed at the cemetery after taking one pill from a bottle Leonard brought him."
"Leonard was here?"
Eleanor nodded, crying now. "He followed us. Daniel told him it was over. Leonard said if Daniel confessed, all of us would go down."
"What did you do?"
"I begged Daniel to go home. He took his medication. Five minutes later, he couldn't breathe."
"And you didn't call the police?"
"I called Leonard."
Eleanor stood, desperate. "I panicked."
"You called the man you think poisoned Dad?"
"I didn't know then."
"You covered it up."
"I was terrified."
Laura pulled away.
A car engine started at the far end of the cemetery.
Evelyn whispered, "That's Leonard's car."
Then her phone rang.
"Anna, if you want the original confession, come get it."
She went still.
"Where?"
Leonard chuckled.
