Chapter 6 - Storage 14

Mark wanted to go alone.
Laura laughed in his face.
"That plan died the second Leonard tied Uncle Richard to a chair."
"Laura, this is not a debate."
"Good. Then stop talking."
Evelyn slid the useless ledger cover into a canvas tote. "If Leonard thinks this is what he wants, we give him this."
Eleanor stood near the island. "Do not go."
Laura turned on her. "You lost the right to tell us where danger is."
An hour later, the three siblings parked two blocks from Vale Storage, an abandoned warehouse complex their father had once used for construction equipment. Rain had started, thin and cold, turning the pavement black.
Mark checked his phone. "No police."
They entered through a side door.
"That's what kidnappers always say," Laura muttered.
"And that's why I texted Detective Ruiz the address," Evelyn said.
"What? You two aren't the only ones allowed to make bad decisions."
Unit 14 smelled like rust, wet cardboard, and old gasoline. A single work light burned in the middle of the space.
Richard sat beneath it, wrists zip-tied to a chair.
"Don't!" he shouted.
Leonard Shaw stepped from the shadows in a raincoat. He was seventy, silver-haired, calm, and so familiar that seeing a gun in his hand felt obscene. He had handled Daniel's will. He had sent birthday cards. He had spoken at the funeral.
"Mark," Leonard said. "I asked you to come alone."
"Family problem," Mark replied. "Family attendance."
Leonard's eyes moved to the tote in Evelyn's hand. "The ledger."
"You stupid girl."
"Runs in the family," Evelyn said.
Leonard raised the gun.
Richard kicked his chair sideways into the work light. The bulb exploded and a gunshot cracked through the dark.
Laura dropped hard. Mark crashed into someone. Evelyn screamed. Richard's chair scraped across concrete.
The gun lay near a stack of pallets.
Laura crawled to him. "Are you hit?"
"No. I think Richard head-butted me."
"You're welcome," Richard groaned from the floor.
"Why did Leonard take you?" she asked.
Richard rubbed his wrists. "Because he thinks Daniel left you proof."
"Proof of what?"
"That Leonard moved the second batch of pension money."
By the time the emergency lights flickered back on, Leonard was gone.
Police lights washed blue through the high windows.
Laura exhaled. "Then it's over."
"No. Leonard has spent twenty-eight years making sure nothing is ever over."
Detective Ruiz entered with two officers.
"Mark Vale?"
"Yes."
"Federal Bureau of Investigation. You're under arrest for wire fraud, conspiracy, and unlawful transfer of estate assets."
Laura stared at Mark.
Mark did not look surprised.
