Chapter 3 - The Blue Room

The blue room had not been blue in twenty years.

Eleanor had painted it cream after Evelyn's tenth birthday and turned it into a guest room nobody used. Still, the name stayed in the family like a bruise under makeup.

Laura folded her arms. "Second wall. Which one?"

"From the entrance," Evelyn said.

Mark looked at her. "You sure?"

"No."

Evelyn walked to the wall opposite the windows, moved an antique dresser, and pressed her fingers along the baseboard. Her face tightened with each breath.

"Pieces."

"Try."

"I was nine. Dad and Uncle Richard were arguing downstairs. Mom brought me up here. She told me to lock the door."

"And then?" Mark asked.

"I heard something hit the wall. A man said, 'Daniel, you can't bury this.' Then Mom screamed."

Laura turned on her mother. "You remember this, don't you?"

"I do," Eleanor said.

"Then talk."

"Not yet."

Mark found a seam in the molding. He pushed. A narrow panel released with a dry click.

There was no money. No jewelry.

Just a cassette tape, an old ledger wrapped in plastic, and a photograph of Daniel Vale standing beside another man in front of the first Vale Development office.

On the back, Daniel had written:

SAMUEL MERCER. PARTNER. FRIEND. THE MAN I FAILED.

"I've never heard that name."

"I have," Mark said.

"Samuel Mercer was charged with stealing from the company pension fund in 1998," Mark continued. "He went to prison. Died four years later."

"So Dad's money came from him?"

"I don't know."

"Yes," Eleanor said.

Every head turned.

"Some of it did," Eleanor added.

Before Laura could ask the next question, the bedroom door handle moved.

Eleanor went white.

"Ellie. Open up."

Evelyn gripped Laura's arm.

Laura knew that voice.
