Chapter 16 - Daniel's Second Safe

The boat was called Second Chance.
Laura nearly laughed when she saw the name.
The forty-foot cabin cruiser sat in a private slip at the far end of the marina under a false registration. Federal agents secured the dock before the family approached.
"He beat us," Mark said.
Richard shook his head. "Not if he doesn't know the safe."
"Daniel made me swear never to tell anyone."
"Your promises have an impressive survival rate," Laura said.
Mark lifted a carpet panel and found a steel hatch. The combination was Daniel's birthday. Of course it was.
Inside were old passports, cash, a revolver, and a digital voice recorder. No ledger.
The recorder still had power. Laura pressed play.
Daniel's voice filled the cabin. "If you're hearing this, I failed to confess while I was alive."
"Samuel Mercer was innocent of the theft that sent him to prison. I moved pension funds to cover company debt. Eleanor signed a false statement because I asked her to. Leonard Shaw manufactured the evidence against Sam."
"But the second theft was Leonard's," Daniel said. "He stole from the same fund after he saw how easy fear made us. When I tried to stop him, he threatened to expose Eleanor, destroy the company, and make sure my children inherited nothing but criminal cases."
"I told myself I was protecting my family. The truth is uglier. I was protecting the image of myself I wanted my family to believe."
Mark's eyes filled.
"Richard tried to report us. I had him fired from the board, blacklisted by lenders, and cut out of the family trust. He was the only one of us who tried to do the right thing."
"If I die before I can fix this, return the money. Sell the estate. Sell the company shares. Do not protect my name. My name is not worth another person's life."
Then another file began automatically.
This one was dated the night Daniel died.
"Leonard just left the cemetery. He changed my pills. I know it. If this reaches anyone, he will come for the ledger pages on Second Chance."
Daniel whispered one final sentence.
"They aren't in the safe."
The recording ended.
Mark looked around the cabin. "Then where are they?"
Evelyn pulled a folded maintenance diagram from beneath the recorder. One compartment was circled below the waterline.
Richard read the label and went still.

"The keel compartment."
