Chapter 11 - The Waterline

By the time the water reached Laura's knees, panic had become physical.
It pressed against her ribs. It made the narrow passage feel smaller with every breath.
"There's got to be another exit," Evelyn said.
"There isn't," Richard answered.
Mark splashed to the electrical panel and tore it open.
"Bad idea," Laura said.
"Excellent observation."
The water climbed.
Evelyn kicked at the brick wall where the case had been hidden. "Dad built this place. He wouldn't make a dead-end service tunnel."
"Actually, Daniel built plenty of dead ends."
"Not helping."
Laura swept her phone light over the bricks. The beam caught a rusted metal ring near the floor, almost hidden by water.
"There."
Mark dove for the ring.
For several seconds, only his back showed above the rising surface. Then he came up gasping.
"It's attached to a hatch."
"On three," Mark said. "One. Two. Three."
Water rushed through the opening, dragging Laura off her feet. The waterproof case slammed against the wall. Evelyn screamed as Richard caught her arm.
"That's our exit," Mark said.
"That's a hole," Laura snapped.
"Today it's both."
The culvert was barely wide enough to crawl. Water chased them through darkness while mud tore at their hands. Laura could hear Mark behind her and Evelyn ahead.
"What?" Laura shouted.
"Gate."
A steel grate blocked the pipe.
Mark kicked it once. Twice. On the third strike, one hinge snapped.
They spilled into the drainage ditch beyond the south lawn, soaked, filthy, and alive.
The pool house was burning.
"No," Mark said.
By the time they reached the patio, fire had swallowed the utility entrance. Someone had poured accelerant along the hedge.
Detective Ruiz's cruiser tore up the drive, followed by a fire engine.
Ruiz jumped out. "Is everybody here?"
"Mom," Evelyn said.
They all turned toward the estate.
"Ma'am, you can't go in."
"My mother is in there!"
No answer.
Then Eleanor stumbled out through the kitchen smoke.
She was not alone.
She was holding Leonard Shaw's gun.
