Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Left

Richard Vale looked older, thinner, and meaner than Laura remembered.
When Mark opened the door, Richard walked in without being invited.
"Well," he said, eyeing the open wall compartment. "Daniel finally left you the breadcrumbs."
Eleanor stepped in front of the box. "Get out."
Richard gave her a tired smile. "Still protecting him, Ellie?"
"He's dead."
"That never stopped you before."
Laura moved closer. "Why are you here?"
"Because Leonard called me."
"He said the children were digging."
"We are not children," Laura snapped.
Mark held up the photo of Daniel and Samuel Mercer. "Tell us what happened."
"Daniel and Sam built Vale Mercer Development together. Sam handled operations. Daniel handled investors. In '98, eleven million dollars disappeared from the employee pension fund."
Evelyn swallowed. "And Sam went to prison?"
"Because your father testified against him."
Laura stared at Eleanor. "Dad framed his own partner?"
"It was more complicated than that," Eleanor said.
"It always is when rich people steal," Richard said.
Mark stepped forward. "Where did the money go?"
"Here. This land. The first hotels. The downtown towers. Half the things your father later called his legacy."
"No."
"Your dad was good at turning dirt into gold. He was even better at turning guilt into charity dinners."
Eleanor slapped him.
He touched his cheek and laughed once. "There she is."
Mark pushed between them. "Enough. What is on the tape?"
"Give me that."
Mark pulled it back. "Why?"
"Because you have no idea what you're holding."
The attack was so sudden that Mark lost his footing. They crashed into the dresser. Richard ripped the cassette from Mark's hand and bolted. Laura shouted. Evelyn grabbed the ledger before it hit the floor.
"Richard!" Eleanor screamed.
She grabbed the passenger door, but Richard accelerated. Gravel tore under her shoes. Mark yanked her backward before the truck clipped the stone gate.
Evelyn came running with her phone raised.
"I got the plate."
Laura looked at the ledger under Evelyn's arm.
"At least we still have that."
Evelyn opened the ledger. Her expression froze.
"What?"
She turned it toward them. Every page had been cut out.
Except one.
On it, in Daniel's handwriting, were three words:
