Chapter 10 - The Key to Box 719

Vivienne called Claire from a blocked number the morning after the brake report.
She wanted a deal.
They met in a Santa Monica parking garage with Mara and police watching from a distance. Vivienne looked nothing like the woman from the gala. No designer dress. No perfect smile. Just fear.
"Julian was going to leave me with everything," she said. "The drugs. Sophie. The forged records. All of it."
Claire's voice stayed flat. "You hit my daughter."
Vivienne looked down. "I know."
She handed Claire a brass key. "Bank of Pacific. Box 719. He kept copies because he trusted nobody."
A black sedan screamed down the ramp before Claire could answer.
Mara yelled, "MOVE!"
Claire jumped behind a concrete pillar. The sedan struck Vivienne and kept going.
Vivienne survived long enough to whisper one thing before the ambulance took her.
"The signatures are fake."
Vivienne survived.
A broken pelvis. Three cracked ribs. A concussion.
She asked for a lawyer before saying anything else.
Claire did not care.
By evening, a warrant opened Box 719.
Inside were passports, cash, memory cards, copies of psychiatric records, and a thick binder labeled MERCER FAMILY CONTINGENCY.
Claire opened it with gloved hands.
The first section contained a draft separation agreement.
Her signature appeared on the final page.
Perfect.
Except Claire had never seen it before.
The agreement would have granted Julian primary physical custody of Sophie and temporary management authority over Sophie's trust "during Claire's treatment and recovery."
The second section was worse.
A letter, supposedly written by Claire, described suicidal thoughts.
Another page authorized Dr. Halpern to recommend inpatient psychiatric care.
Again, her signature.
Again, fake.
"They were building a complete story," Mara said. "One document at a time."
Claire turned the page.
There were photographs of her asleep after being drugged. Photos of empty wine bottles placed beside the bed. A video still showing her stumbling near the pool.
Then a spreadsheet.
Dates. Doses. Behaviors.
Claire read one line.
10/14 - 2mg in tea - confused by dinner - argued with J - useful.
She sat down.
"He kept notes."
Mara's face was hard. "People like him think documentation makes a lie true."
At the back of the binder was a property deed for a house in Cabo San Lucas under a shell company tied to Julian.
And airline reservations for three passengers leaving Los Angeles the following night.
Julian Mercer.

Sophie Mercer.
