Chapter 16 - The Family Secret

Evelyn Bellamy was Arthur's younger sister.

She had spent thirty years as the family's general counsel.

Claire had known her as the aunt who remembered birthdays, corrected everyone's grammar, and never raised her voice.

She was also the trustee who had drafted the guardianship clause.

"No," Arthur said when Claire told him. "Sophie is mistaken."

Claire stared at him.

"You said that about Julian for years without saying the words. I'm done accepting it."

Mara pulled Evelyn's building-access records.

She had entered Arthur's house fourteen times over the past six months, often when Arthur was traveling.

Her phone records showed calls with Dominic.

Her banking records were cleaner.

Too clean.

Then investigators found a trust in the Cayman Islands controlled by a law firm Evelyn had used for decades.

Twenty-two million dollars sat inside it.

Arthur looked physically ill.

"Why?"

Claire's laugh was bitter. "Maybe ask her."

Evelyn arrived at the Bellamy offices that afternoon as if nothing had happened.

Police were waiting.

She did not run.

She did not cry.

She requested counsel and sat perfectly straight through questioning.

Finally Claire was allowed into the room.

Evelyn looked at her with something close to pity.

"You always were too emotional for this family."

Claire almost smiled.

"That line sounds familiar."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"Julian was weak. Dominic was greedy. I tried to keep the damage contained."

"By helping them drug my daughter?"

"I never authorized that."

"You showed them the hidden room."

A pause.

That was enough.

Evelyn folded her hands.

"Your grandfather built the trust badly. Sophie will inherit voting influence over assets she cannot possibly understand. I was correcting an irresponsible structure."

"By stealing it?"

"By protecting the company from children."

Claire stared at her aunt.

There it was.

The family disease in one sentence.

Money first. Control second. People somewhere below.

Then Evelyn leaned forward.

"You should ask your father why that hidden room exists."

Claire turned toward Arthur behind the glass.

He looked away.

Again.

May you like

Evelyn smiled.

"You see? I'm not the only Bellamy who kept secrets in that house."
