Chapter 17 - The Woman Who Never Raised Her Voice

Before Evelyn's case moved forward, Arthur finally told Claire why the hidden room existed.
It had been built decades earlier, after Claire's mother suffered a breakdown following the death of Claire's brother. Arthur had hidden her there twice while waiting for a private doctor because he was terrified of scandal.
"I called it protection," Arthur said. "It was control."
Evelyn had arranged the doctor. She had learned early that Bellamy secrets could be managed like money.
Dominic's cooperation agreement cracked the conspiracy open.
Evelyn had discovered Julian's affair with Vivienne before Claire did.
Instead of warning Claire, she recruited them.
Julian wanted money and status. Vivienne wanted money and Julian. Dominic wanted control of Bellamy Infrastructure.
Evelyn wanted something colder.
Order.
She believed Claire was too compassionate, too hesitant, too "soft" to inherit influence over the company. Sophie, in time, would be worse.
So Evelyn designed a legal crisis.
Claire would appear unstable.
Julian would become Sophie's guardian.
Dominic would manage the financial side.
Evelyn would control both men through evidence of their crimes.
"She built a cage where everybody thought they were holding the key," Mara said.
Vivienne confirmed enough to support Dominic's statement.
Halpern confirmed the rest.
Evelyn was charged.
She remained composed while cameras followed her into court.
Claire watched from the back row.
At the bail hearing, Evelyn's lawyer argued she was a respected attorney with no criminal history.
The prosecutor played part of a recovered call.
Evelyn's voice:
"Increase Claire's dose by half. I need the board to see her confused before Monday."
The judge denied bail.
For the first time, Evelyn looked at Claire.
Not sorry.
Angry.
After court, Julian's lawyer approached Claire in the hall.
"Mr. Mercer wants to discuss a plea."
"That's between him and the prosecutor."
"He wants one thing from you."
Claire kept walking.
"A chance to say goodbye to Sophie."
She stopped.
Every muscle in her body tightened.
"No."
"He is her father."
Claire turned.
"He used that word as a weapon. Don't use it with me."
The lawyer stepped back.
That evening Sophie sat in the bathtub blowing bubbles through a plastic straw.
For the first time in weeks, she laughed.
Claire nearly cried at the sound.
Then Sophie became quiet.
"Mom?"
"Yeah, baby?"
"Did Dad ever love me?"
Claire's heart broke in a new place.
She sat on the bathroom floor.
"I think your dad loved being loved. Sometimes people confuse that with loving somebody else."
Sophie thought about it.
"That's sad."
"Yeah. It is."
Sophie leaned closer.
"I have one more secret."
Claire's pulse jumped.
May you like
"You can tell me anything."
Sophie whispered, "I took something from Dad the night of the party."
